Little Girl’s Room Gets a Wallpaper Wonderland

Dreamy Pink & Butterfly Haven: Our Daughter’s Enchanting Bedroom Makeover Reveal

Is it truly strange to confess I want to move into our daughter’s newly transformed room? Because it is, without exaggeration, absolutely captivating and perfectly adorable! While I won’t be permanently relocating, I certainly can’t guarantee there won’t be frequent mommy-daughter blanket fort sessions in this charming space. After all, I’m not exactly the type to embrace backyard camping with its accompanying bugs and dirt.

Just a short while ago, a mere week, this bedroom presented a vastly different picture…

The Motivation Behind the Makeover: From Neglect to Nurture

To be completely transparent, this bedroom had remained largely untouched since we moved into our home last April. In our defense, our attention had been heavily consumed by a whirlwind of other projects: the living room, the cozy breakfast nook, the welcoming foyer, the bustling playroom, the formal dining room, our serene master bedroom, the functional hallway bathroom, and the compact powder room. You get the idea – we’ve been incredibly busy, and naturally, a touch of “mom guilt” started to creep in regarding Olivia’s space.

However, with the exciting news of a new little one on the way, a powerful determination took hold. I wanted to ensure Olivia felt exceptionally special and prepared for her upcoming role as a big sister. The goal was for her to have her own beautiful, inspiring sanctuary before we embarked on the nursery project, giving her a sense of ownership and comfort during this significant family transition.

The Transformation Journey: A Weekend of Pink Paint and Patterns

The perfect opportunity arose when Olivia went out-of-state last week to visit close family during her spring break. This precious window allowed for an intensive, three-day painting marathon. By the weekend, my wonderful mom joined me, and together, we tackled the wallpaper installation – all while joyfully jamming out to classic Oldies, of course! It was a labor of love, fueled by caffeine, good company, and a shared vision.

Oh, how I wish I had captured Olivia’s reaction on video when she first stepped into her newly transformed room. To summarize, it was an explosion of pure delight – a symphony of fan-girl squeals and unbridled excitement. That moment alone made every brushstroke and every meticulously placed wallpaper panel utterly worthwhile.

Key Design Elements: Crafting a Timeless & Playful Space

The Perfect Color Palette: Soft Pink and Crisp White

For the walls, I selected Behr My Sweetheart, an exquisite shade that is the epitome of a light, delicate blush pink. It strikes the perfect balance – neither too childish nor overly sophisticated, making it ideal for a girl who will soon be navigating her pre-teen years. Complementing this soft hue, the trim was painted with Benjamin Moore Simply White, providing a clean, crisp contrast that brightens the room and highlights its architectural details. Robert and I have future plans to enhance the lower portion of the walls with elegant picture frame molding below the chair rail, adding another layer of classic charm.

Currently, Olivia’s mattress and box spring are temporarily resting on the floor. This is a short-term arrangement as we eagerly await the arrival of her brand-new bed. Her previous bed, a fantastic thrift store find at just $20 three years ago, had served its purpose admirably but finally gave up the ghost – a testament to its long and well-loved life.

Olivia’s Vision: Butterflies and Pink

Our little client, Olivia, had only two specific requests for her dream room: butterflies and pink. These simple yet profound desires became the guiding principles for the entire design. My search for the perfect butterfly wallpaper was extensive, as I wanted something that would not only fulfill her immediate wish but also gracefully transition with her as she grows. With Olivia turning six this fall, finding a pattern that felt both youthful and timeless was crucial for those pivotal pre-teen and teenage years.

After much deliberation, I discovered this captivating wallpaper pattern at Anthropologie. While it was undeniably a splurge, the investment felt entirely justified. Given that we were only wallpapering one accent wall, and specifically the portion above the chair rail, the cost was manageable. The exquisite design featuring delicate butterflies promised to grow with her, adding a sophisticated yet whimsical touch that wouldn’t feel out of place years down the line.

For those inspired to try wallpapering themselves, I highly recommend it! It’s far less daunting than many believe, especially when focusing on a single accent wall. You can find my comprehensive beginner’s guide to hanging wallpaper here, which breaks down the process into easy, actionable steps.

Cohesive Details: Doors, Floors, and Window Treatments

Continuing a design motif we’ve embraced throughout our home, I painted Olivia’s bedroom door in Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron. This rich, dark hue provides a striking contrast against the soft pink walls and crisp white trim, adding a touch of modern elegance. While the existing doorknob remains for now, I envision replacing it with a bronze or glass option in the near future to further elevate the room’s aesthetic and tie into a more vintage-inspired hardware theme.

A significant improvement came from Robert and my dad, who painstakingly ripped up the old, worn carpet, revealing the beautiful hardwood floors beneath. This instantly transformed the room, making it feel more open, airy, and refined. To ensure Olivia doesn’t have to step onto a cold floor each morning, we plan to roll out a smaller, soft area rug eventually, adding warmth and comfort to her personal space.

The opposing wall now looks dramatically improved, thanks to the concerted effort of hauling out all the miscellaneous items and “junk” we weren’t quite sure what to do with. This clearing of clutter has created a much more serene and functional environment. I have a strong suspicion a well-deserved yard sale is on our horizon to find new homes for these pre-loved possessions!

The Craigslist dresser, a diamond in the rough, is next on the agenda for a complete makeover, which we anticipate tackling in the next week or two. This piece holds immense potential to become a bespoke, functional addition to the room. Furthermore, I’ve replaced the old, outdated blinds with these beautiful warm bamboo shades. They introduce a natural texture and provide excellent light control while contributing to the room’s cozy and organic feel.

The Final Touches: What’s Next on the Agenda?

While the room has undergone a significant transformation, there are still a few exciting elements on our to-do list to truly complete Olivia’s dream space. Curtains will add softness and privacy, while the arrival of her new bed and coordinating nightstands will establish the room’s central function. Replacing the light fixture will provide both improved illumination and a stylistic upgrade. Finally, carefully selected wall decor will infuse personality and complete the cohesive design. Each of these steps will bring us closer to the ultimate vision for this enchanting girl’s room.
