Transforming IKEA Furniture: A Deep Dive into a Navy Blue Office Cabinet Makeover
There’s a unique satisfaction that comes from giving a beloved piece of IKEA furniture a fresh, personalized look. It’s an opportunity to infuse mass-produced design with individual style, transforming functional items into statement pieces that perfectly complement your home’s aesthetic. Today, we’re delving into a rewarding IKEA furniture makeover, focusing on how a touch of navy blue paint can brilliantly elevate a neutral room, specifically a dedicated home office.
Remember those blissful, winding strolls through IKEA’s expansive showrooms? While those experiences might be on pause, the spirit of Swedish design continues to inspire countless DIY projects. Our recent venture involved two IKEA Liatorp cabinets, destined for our evolving home office. Despite a necessary delivery fee, these units proved to be an incredibly cost-effective storage solution, outcompeting numerous other options we explored, and fitting our space like a glove. The value and timeless design of IKEA’s Liatorp series made it an undeniable choice for this transformation.

The Liatorp cabinets were chosen not only for their spacious storage but also for their clean lines and classic appeal, making them ideal candidates for a personalized paint finish.
Mastering the Art of Painting Laminate IKEA Furniture
Painting IKEA furniture, particularly pieces with a laminate or melamine finish, requires a specific approach. Without the right preparation, paint adhesion will be compromised, leading to frustrating peeling and chipping. We’ve previously shared our tried-and-true method for painting laminate surfaces (which you can find in detail here), but it bears repeating: preparation is paramount. This isn’t just about cleaning; it’s about creating a surface that paint can truly bond with. For pieces featuring glass, like our Liatorp cabinets, there’s an additional secret weapon that simplifies the process immensely: masking liquid.
Essential Tools and Techniques for a Flawless Finish
Working with furniture that includes glass panels, or any delicate areas, can often be a tedious process involving meticulous taping. However, a small can of specialized Masking Liquid can be an absolute game-changer, saving you time and ensuring crisp, clean lines. It’s an investment that pays dividends in convenience and professional results. Trust us, once you try it, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it.

Our process began with thoroughly wiping down the entire cabinet surface using Liquid Deglosser. This crucial step removes any residues, grime, and slightly etches the laminate, improving paint adhesion. After the deglosser, we carefully brushed on the Masking Liquid onto the glass panels and allowed it to dry completely. This creates a temporary, peelable barrier that protects the glass from paint. Finally, a robust coat of KILZ Adhesion Primer was applied. This primer is specifically formulated for challenging surfaces like laminate and ensures that your chosen topcoat will adhere flawlessly and endure for years to come. This trio of products—degreaser, masking liquid, and adhesion primer—is the secret sauce to a successful IKEA furniture makeover.
Choosing the Right Paint for Durability and Style
When it comes to the topcoat, our preference leans towards Benjamin Moore Advance paint. This alkyd-based paint offers a furniture-grade finish that cures to a hard, durable surface, perfect for high-traffic pieces or furniture that needs to withstand daily use. Its best feature, however, is the ability to be custom-tinted to virtually any color, offering unparalleled design flexibility. If you’re open to a more curated color palette, Fusion Mineral Paint is another excellent choice. It’s known for its built-in topcoat and exceptional durability, making it a fantastic option for a quicker, yet equally beautiful, finish.
For this specific project, the goal was to introduce a sophisticated pop of color into our predominantly neutral office. This led us on a quest to find the perfect shade of blue. We sampled what felt like a “bajillion” different blues, carefully observing how each one interacted with the room’s natural light and existing decor.

Embracing the Timeless Elegance of Benjamin Moore Hale Navy
After much deliberation and swatching, we finally landed on Benjamin Moore Hale Navy, a color often lauded as one of the best navy paint colors of all time. This rich, deep blue strikes a perfect balance, offering sophistication without being overpowering. It has an incredible ability to anchor a room, providing a classic yet contemporary feel. In a neutral setting, Hale Navy acts as a stunning accent, adding depth, warmth, and a touch of drama that is both inviting and professional, ideal for a home office environment.

With the cabinets beautifully painted and cured, we immediately began integrating them into the office. The newfound storage was quickly put to good use. To further enhance the room’s aesthetic and functionality, we also hung these elegant curtains, installed these coordinating curtain rods, and rolled out this cozy rug. Each element was chosen to complement the deep navy of the cabinets, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.
The transformation is truly remarkable. The office, once a blank canvas, now feels like a real, almost pulled-together room. (Ignoring, of course, the lingering construction dust, which we’ll pretend isn’t there for now!) The rich navy hue provides a striking contrast to the light walls and adds a layer of professionalism and comfort to the space, making it a more inspiring environment for work and creativity.

These newly refreshed cabinets look absolutely perfect alongside our DIY shower curtain art, a project we tackled just a few weeks prior. The synergy between the customized furniture and the personalized artwork truly makes the room feel unique and reflective of our style. The combination of DIY efforts showcases how thoughtful design can be achieved on a budget, turning ordinary items into extraordinary focal points.

The finish line for our home office makeover is now almost in sight! With these major elements in place, we’re keenly looking forward to the final stages of decorating and styling. It’s truly rewarding to see months of planning and hard work come to fruition, transforming a functional space into an inspiring haven.
