Vintage Inspired Shutter Cabinet Transformation

Faux Antique Shutter Armoire Makeover: A Simple Guide

It’s been an exciting couple of weeks, filled with a whirlwind of projects and changes! The guest bedroom makeover at my parents’ house is underway, the garage is currently housing furniture in various stages of completion, and there’s a secret project brewing that I’ll be announcing soon. But the biggest news? We’ve sold our house!

We’re ready to trade our current, slightly cramped neighborhood for a bit more land, the peace of the countryside, and a connection to nature that we’ve been missing since Robert and I were raised in the country. If you follow me on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll know that I’m over the moon with excitement.

We had an offer on what we thought was the “perfect” house last week, but unfortunately, we didn’t get it. So, the search continues, and we’re confident that we’ll find the perfect place when the time is right. We know that God has great plans for us.

In a month or so, we’ll either be living with my parents temporarily, closing on a fixer-upper, or working with a builder on a new home. The suspense is building!

The Guest Bedroom Makeover Begins: A Faux Antique Shutter Armoire

Now, let’s dive into the guest bedroom makeover! The first project completed is this fantastic faux antique shutter armoire.

Faux Antique Shutter Armoire Makeover

When I shared my ideas for the guest bedroom, I mentioned that the room needed storage for Olivia’s toys and books. My parents’ house is always a party with Olivia around!

I found this green armoire on Craigslist for just $40, and I couldn’t resist. The size was perfect, the shutter-style doors had a farmhouse feel, and it would be perfect for hiding away Olivia’s toys. The green was appealing, but it wouldn’t fit with the room’s planned color scheme. So, a fresh coat of paint, some wax, and new hardware were just what it needed!

Supplies Used for the Armoire Makeover

Here’s a list of the supplies I used to give this armoire a new lease on life:

  • Fusion Mineral Paint in Plaster
  • Fusion Mineral Paint in Linen
  • Fusion Mineral Paint in Casement
  • Homestead House Espresso Wax
  • Cast iron hardware (I found mine on sale at Hobby Lobby.)
  • Paintbrush
  • Rag

Achieving the Faux Antique Look

Even though the armoire was a budget-friendly find, I wanted to give it the appearance of an antique treasure. Here’s how I did it:

I started by applying two coats of Fusion Mineral Paint in the color Plaster to the entire armoire, excluding the top. To add depth and an aged feel, I applied Espresso wax, leaving a small amount in the corners and edges of the shutter doors.

The cast iron hardware looks stunning against that creamy color.

Finished Armoire with New Hardware

To give the top a wood-like appearance, I brushed on one coat of Linen and let it dry. Then, I dry brushed a couple of layers of Casement and finished with a light layer of Espresso wax. The different tones created a beautiful layered effect.

I was absolutely thrilled with how it turned out! It’s the perfect storage solution.

I love that it now conceals Olivia’s toys in the bottom drawers and has shelves for books and linens.

The Guest Bedroom Transformation Continues

The rest of this space is coming together quickly. And, as you may have noticed, the dark gray and bright red color scheme that was in this room is gone! My dad took care of that and did a fantastic job with primer and paint.

While my younger self might have been sad to see it go, I’m excited about the change. The room already feels so much bigger with just that simple update.

Before and After Comparison

So, that’s one piece of furniture down, and five more to go! Our furniture projects always seem to come in waves.

Are you tackling any furniture painting projects this weekend? Perhaps even house hunting?

If you’re more interested in cleaning and organizing, you can still find the Conquer Your Clutter Super Bundle here. I have a feeling we will be doing a lot of that soon as we pack up to move.
