A Candlelight Christmas Home Tour: Embrace the Magic of the Season
As the year winds down, there’s a special time when our homes seem to radiate a warmth that extends far beyond their walls. It’s a period when the world appears a little kinder, a little more gentle. It’s Christmas time.

Every December, I eagerly anticipate the evening hours. As the sun dips below the horizon and the house settles into a peaceful hush, I love watching the soft glow of lights and the warm flicker of candles come to life. There’s an undeniable magic to Christmas at night. The dancing flames, the gentle twinkle of lights, and the quiet serenity that envelops everything encourage me to pause, take a deep breath, and reflect on what truly matters in life.

I firmly believe that home transcends the physical space; it embodies a feeling. And during the Christmas season, that feeling is nothing short of pure magic. It’s the feeling of belonging, of warmth, of love, and of peace. It’s the feeling that wraps around you like a cozy blanket on a cold winter’s night.
Continuing our annual tradition, I’m excited to share this year’s Candlelight Christmas Night Tour with you. Consider this your personal virtual stroll through our home after dark. No need for bustling conversations or busy schedules – just a collection of cozy photos to scroll through, moments to savor as you sip your cocoa by a crackling fire, and a bit of tranquility to infuse into your bustling holiday season. Entryway: A Welcoming Glow
This year, our entryway presents a slightly different appearance than usual, and not entirely by choice. Sometimes, life throws unexpected challenges our way, and this year was no exception.

Just days before I was scheduled to capture this tour, we experienced a pipe burst that necessitated a full-scale water mitigation effort in our foyer. The kind of event that turns your home upside down in what feels like an instant. As a result, I have fewer photos of the entryway illuminated at night than I typically would.
Thankfully, I managed to capture a couple of images of our foyer bathed in the soft glow of evening before the chaos ensued. I’m immensely grateful that I did.

Even amidst unfinished projects and imperfections, beauty can still emerge. And, in all honesty, that sentiment feels particularly relevant for this season. Christmas isn’t about perfection; it’s about finding joy and beauty in the midst of everyday life, embracing the imperfections, and cherishing the moments that truly matter.
Dining Room: A Festive Feast for the Eyes
Venturing a little further into our home, you’ll find the dining room, where our Christmas tree stands tall, its lights twinkling like a thousand tiny stars.

I’m absolutely delighted with how our DIY tree stand planter turned out in this space. In the darkness, the room almost resembles a painting: deep greens, soft whites, and warm amber light playing against the backdrop of a landscape mural. The effect is both captivating and serene.

Switching from traditional candles to rechargeable lamps was undoubtedly a wise decision for this room. It provides the ambiance without the safety concerns. There are many ways to decorate your dining room for Christmas.

Media Room: Where Memories Sparkle
During Christmastime, particularly at night, the media room becomes one of the most emotionally resonant spaces in our home. It’s a place where memories come alive, where traditions are honored, and where we create new moments to cherish.

I opted for a simple yet layered mantel arrangement, incorporating asymmetrical garland, delicate fairy lights, and an array of candles flickering in front of the mantel mirror above the fireplace. Once darkness descends, everything is reflected and amplified, creating a warm, golden glow that fills the entire room with an unparalleled sense of coziness.

The Christmas tree in this room might just be my favorite of all. Not because it’s perfectly styled or meticulously arranged, but because it’s brimming with a lifetime of memories. Each ornament holds a special story, from the ones Robert and I hung on our childhood trees to the handmade creations crafted by our girls, and the newer ones we’ve collected as mementos from our travels. It’s a living timeline of our family, glowing softly after dark.

On the hearth, I always place my wooden shoes alongside my brother’s, a cherished gift our grandfather brought back from Holland when we were young. It’s a small detail, but one that carries immense significance, especially during this time of year, now that he’s no longer with us. It serves as a reminder of the love and warmth he brought into our lives.

Beneath the tree, you’ll typically find a scattering of Christmas storybooks, ready for cozy evenings spent reading together with our girls. This room is all about tradition, memory, and creating space for moments that feel slow, meaningful, and deeply connected. It’s a sanctuary where we can escape the hustle and bustle of the season and simply be together.

Primary Bedroom: A Cozy Retreat
This year, our primary bedroom seemed to beckon for a touch of Christmas magic. With just a few simple additions, it was transformed into a cozy and inviting retreat.
We recently painted the walls a deep, moody green (Benjamin Moore Vintage Vogue), and once the lights are dimmed, the color envelops the room in the most calming and comforting glow. Seriously, it feels like a warm hug. It didn’t require much to evoke a festive ambiance, just a few carefully chosen layers.

I draped a single strand of garland along the headboard, arranged a couple of vases filled with winter greenery, and placed some lighted branches on the dresser, adding a subtle yet enchanting twinkle.
However, the true magic of this room lies in the lamps. The warm, low lighting against the dark walls cultivates a peaceful atmosphere that encourages you to linger a little longer, to savor the tranquility and unwind from the day’s stresses.

It’s a quiet kind of Christmas in here – simple, cozy, and calm – a welcome respite at the end of a busy day during a bustling season. It’s a space to recharge, reconnect, and find solace in the simple joys of the season.

Living Room: A Luxurious Gathering Space
This year, we decided to paint the mantel a deep navy (Benjamin Moore Temptation) and added tongue-and-groove planks to the ceiling, instantly bestowing the room with a richer, more luxurious ambiance. At night, these updates truly come to life, transforming the space into a warm and inviting haven.
The darker tones ground the space, creating a sense of stability and depth, while the candlelight and twinkle lights soften the edges, casting a gentle and inviting glow throughout the room. It’s a perfect balance of sophistication and warmth.

I also unearthed several of my grandmother’s silver pieces from storage and finally gave them a thorough polish. Seeing them displayed again has been such a source of joy. The way the candlelight reflects off the silver adds the most enchanting effect to the room. It feels like having a little piece of her with us this season, a tangible connection to the past.

With the Christmas tree lit, the fireplace flickering, and the room bathed in soft, ambient light, this is where our home feels its most comforting as we settle in for a movie night. It’s the place we gather, unwind, and linger, sharing stories, laughter, and precious moments. At night, it truly feels like the heart of our home, a warm and inviting sanctuary where we can all be together.

As I wander through our home by candlelight each year, I’m gently reminded that Christmas was never intended to be a loud or hurried affair. It was meant to be a time of quiet reflection, of sacred moments, and of unwavering hope. A single light piercing through the darkness, the Light of the World dwelling among us.
My sincere hope is that this candlelight tour provides you with a small pause in your busy season, a reminder to slow down, rest your heart, and make room for what truly matters most in your life. From our home to yours, may your nights be peaceful and your Christmas be filled with His presence, love, and joy.
