When we first moved into our home, our bedroom was incredibly basic. We started with a mattress on the floor. Over time, we added a bed, nightstands, and a dresser. Now, it’s time to create the master bedroom of our dreams.
We initially focused on the downstairs areas, considering the master bedroom a personal indulgence. But now, I’m eager to personalize this space.
Decorating this room was a challenge. Discovering my design style has been empowering, and I’ve learned a lot through this homeowning journey. It’s exciting to finally know what resonates with me.
Our master bathroom and closet doors were the starting point for this makeover. Our bathroom door opens directly into our shower door, causing a minor traffic jam. Robert suggested we replace the doors with sliding barn doors.
The solution? Sliding barn doors!
Robert’s input is essential since it is his bedroom too. He requested blue/gray walls, a deer mount, and no floral prints. Consider it done!
This design plan includes a mix of textures, colors, and styles that we think will create a relaxing and stylish master bedroom retreat. Here’s a breakdown of the key elements:
1. Plank Wall
I’m a big fan of board and batten and shiplap walls. We’re planning to create a focal point behind our bed.
Inspired by Jenna Sue Design Blog, we will create a plank wall. We love how Jenna from Jenna Sue Design Blog created her own. The wall color is very similar to what we are thinking of using.

2. The Bed
Our current bed is dark, and we are thinking of brightening up the wood with lime wash. We are also thinking of painting the fabric with a lighter color to resemble this one from Restoration Hardware.

3. Barn Doors
We love the look of barn doors from Unskinny Boppy. We are building a pair for our bathroom and closet doors to open up the room and give it a modern rustic feel.

4. Windows
We want to keep the windows simple, while still adding texture and character. We’ll add our own DIY window trim, and hang white Ikea curtains, similar to those in our breakfast area. If budget allows, we might switch out the white blinds for bamboo shades, to add balance to the wood from the barn doors.

5. Ticking Stripes
We are considering adding ticking stripe pillows and a duvet to our bed to match the crisp white linens.

6. Rug
Finding a rug is a love/hate experience, but a rug makes a HUGE impact! We’ve chosen a vintage grey rug.

7. Mirror
We will replace our existing mirror with a window mirror. It will have more charm.

8. Faux Taxidermy
I love this one of Robert’s requests. Deer antlers remind us of our honeymoon.

We stayed at the gorgeous Grand Bohemian Hotel in Asheville, NC for our honeymoon. I realized what styles spoke to me. Walking into our hotel room, I wanted our bedroom to look like it. This was our hotel suite:
And because we’re ultra classy…
