Sometimes the smallest updates make the biggest difference. This week Robert and I completed a few quick curb appeal projects around the garage—each one took just an afternoon, but together they completely transformed the look.
If you’ve been following along, you might remember this section of the house already had a makeover years ago.
Nine years ago we limewashed the brick and painted the garage door Behr Cracked Pepper, which refreshed the exterior and gave it more cohesion.

Lately I kept thinking the area was good but could be elevated with a few finishing touches. We focused on four simple improvements that layered nicely over the foundation we already had.

DIY Copper Lantern Fixtures
We began with lighting, swapping the black sconces for copper lantern-style wall lights on either side of the garage. The change instantly warmed the facade and added a timeless, well-loved look.
Copper gives a classic, slightly rustic feel that suggests a home that’s been thoughtfully cared for over time. To make sure the finish read as realistic, I used a copper spray paint I tested recently. I’m even considering adding vintage-style flickering bulbs to mimic a gas lantern glow.

Star Jasmine Trellis
Next, we planted star jasmine on each side of the garage and installed wooden lattice for it to climb. I wanted soft, evergreen foliage to frame the door and add fragrance and texture over time.
Jasmine isn’t instant gratification—it will take a season or two to fill in—but I can already picture the delicate, draping vines softening the hard lines of the garage and creating a welcoming, lived-in look.
This is a patient improvement that pays off visually and with scent, especially in late spring and summer.
Trash Can Hiding Panels
One practical update was screening the trash can. A visible bin undermines otherwise polished curb appeal, so we installed no-dig lattice panels to hide it from the street.
These panels were an easy solution—no concrete, no heavy installation—just a small privacy screen that keeps the area looking tidy and intentional.
Carriage Style Garage Door Hardware
Finally, we added magnetized carriage-style hardware—handles and hinges that clip on without drilling. It’s a simple, affordable detail that instantly makes the garage door feel purposeful and custom.
This kind of small upgrade photographs like a high-end change but is incredibly easy to install, and it ties the whole look together with a classic, cohesive finish.

What I love about this refresh is how achievable it was: no permits, no contractors, and none of the mess that comes with major renovations. A few thoughtful details layered on top of what we already had turned a nice space into a polished one.
Curb appeal doesn’t always require dramatic overhauls. Often, small, intentional upgrades—warm lighting, climbing greenery, a discreet screen for utilities, and a bit of hardware—are all it takes to make a house feel finished.
