High-Contrast Living Room Makeover: A Dramatic Transformation with Benjamin Moore Paint
Stepping into a new home is always an adventure, and for us, the journey began with a flood of paint gallons! Since closing on our new house last week, I’ve honestly lost count of how much paint we’ve used, but it’s easily upwards of thirteen gallons. My arms are practically screaming, but every ounce of effort has been absolutely worth it. The vision for our new living room was clear from the start: a dramatic, chic transformation, achieved simply with the power of paint.
Just a few short days ago, our living room presented a very different picture. While undeniably a great space with good bones, its aesthetic wasn’t quite aligned with our personal style. It had a warm, if somewhat dated, feel that yearned for a fresh, contemporary touch. The potential was there, waiting to be unleashed.

The room, as lovely as it was initially, embraced a palette of soft yellows and beiges. While yellow can be beautiful and inviting, it simply isn’t my aesthetic preference. We knew immediately that a brighter, more versatile backdrop was essential to truly make this house our home. The goal was to create a canvas that would not only feel more “us” but also allow for endless decorating possibilities down the line.

The Power of Neutrals: Embracing Flexibility in Design
One of the most compelling reasons I consistently gravitate towards neutral paint colors is the incredible design flexibility they offer. (Speaking of which, I recently shared some of my all-time favorites – definitely check them out if you’re considering a similar path!) This adaptability is a game-changer for someone like me, who might, shall we say, suffer from a bit of “decorating commitment issues.” With a neutral base, I can effortlessly redecorate, introduce new color palettes, and adapt our rooms to reflect the changing seasons or simply a spontaneous change in mood. This freedom to evolve our living spaces without the need for a full repaint is truly invaluable.

Brightening Up: Simply White for Ceilings and Trim
Despite the generous natural light filtering in through the beautiful French doors, the room often felt a tad subdued. To truly amplify the brightness and create an airy atmosphere, our first step was to tackle the ceilings and trim. We opted for Benjamin Moore Aura paint in Simply White. This choice was deliberate: a crisp, true white has an almost magical ability to make a space feel larger and more luminous. The previous beige-toned trim, while not offensive, absorbed light rather than reflecting it. Swapping it out for Simply White was like flicking a switch, instantly bouncing all that gorgeous sunlight around the room and significantly enhancing its overall brightness. It’s hard to convey the sheer physical effort that went into this process, but trust me, we were working our booties off! This transformation immediately made the room feel fresh, clean, and incredibly open. I truly feel like I can see now!

Warm Neutrals: Embracing Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee
With the ceilings and trim providing a brilliant white frame, we moved on to the walls. Our choice for this vital component was Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee. This beautiful shade offers a subtle creaminess, a warm undertone that prevents the room from feeling stark or cold. It’s a sophisticated neutral that complements the crisp white trim perfectly, creating a gentle contrast that adds depth without overwhelming the senses. Swiss Coffee provides that ideal balanced backdrop, inviting and elegant, making it the perfect foundation for the high-contrast elements we were about to introduce.
Adding Drama: The Allure of Wrought Iron Doors
I’ve long harbored a desire to paint interior doors a striking dark color, and this new house presented the perfect opportunity to fulfill that design dream. To achieve the crisp, classic look we envisioned for this space, we made a bold decision: painting all the doors in Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron. This isn’t just any dark color; it’s a meticulously balanced shade—darker than charcoal, yet not quite a true black. It possesses an incredible richness and depth that instantly elevates the entire room. The Wrought Iron doors provide that essential high-contrast pop, creating visual interest and a sophisticated anchor point within the otherwise light and airy space. The transformation is genuinely astounding. It’s a testament to how a single, well-chosen paint color can dramatically alter the perception and ambiance of a room, adding layers of elegance and modern flair. The power of paint truly never ceases to amaze me!

Beyond the Paint: The Vision for a Finished Space
Currently, with the paint fresh on the walls and doors, the room still has a somewhat pristine, almost “hospital-like” feel. But this is merely the canvas! Our comprehensive design plan includes introducing textures, warmth, and personality through a carefully selected rug and a curated collection of accessories. This weekend marks another exciting phase as we swap out the existing ceiling fan for a more stylish option and begin hauling in our furniture. I’ll be sharing all the behind-the-scenes action and progress on my Instagram stories, so be sure to follow along!
Of course, a new house always comes with a list of smaller, yet equally important, tasks. We still need to replace all the dated, yellowy-beige outlets and light switches with crisp white ones to match our new trim. And, as anyone who has moved knows, tackling the “crazy pile of cords and cables” is a universal challenge that awaits our attention. These minor details, once addressed, will contribute significantly to the overall polished and finished look of the room.

Navigating Design Dilemmas: The TV and the Mantel
One particular design dilemma that emerged in this room was the placement of the television. It’s a bit of a bittersweet compromise. Given the layout and the desire to maximize seating and flow, there truly was no other suitable spot for the TV except above the fireplace. The alternative—placing it in front of one of the windows—was simply not an option. This means I won’t be able to decorate our mantel in the traditional sense, which is a little sad, but sometimes functionality must take precedence. It’s all part of the unique challenges and creative solutions that come with making a new house work for your lifestyle.

However, every design challenge often brings an opportunity for a delightful discovery! I recently stumbled upon these adorable little sconces at Lowe’s, marked down to just $16 each on clearance. They’re absolutely perfect for adding a touch of charm and ambient lighting to the room, and their affordability certainly makes up for the mantel dilemma. It’s these little victories that make the entire renovation process so rewarding!

First Steps Towards Furnishing: A Glimpse of the Future
As of now, we’ve brought in a couple of accent chairs and an area rug to start envisioning the layout and feel of the room. This initial placement gives us a better sense of scale and how different pieces will interact with the newly painted backdrop. Do you like them? We’re slowly but surely building out the space, layering in elements that will create a cohesive and comfortable environment. It’s certainly not “coastal chic” just yet, but the potential is palpable, and we’re excited about the direction it’s heading!

So very coastal chic. 😉 Heehee! There’s still much to do, but every step brings us closer to a finished home.
The Journey Continues: A House Becoming a Home
At this point in our whirlwind renovation, we’ve successfully painted four rooms, with three more to go before the official move-in day next week. We’re so eager to settle in and, of course, let my incredibly supportive parents have their house back! The sheer volume of work has been immense, but the progress we’ve made in such a short time is incredibly gratifying.
We are profoundly grateful for all the love and support we’ve received since sharing the initial before tour excitement last week. It still feels surreal that we actually get to live here; part of me keeps expecting the previous sellers to appear and tell us it was all a prank! This entire experience, from navigating the challenges to celebrating the small victories, is distinctly different from our journey with our last house. Some aspects have been more challenging, requiring creative problem-solving and a lot of elbow grease. However, we are immensely excited for the journey ahead, embracing every step as we transform this beautiful property into a place that truly feels like home, filled with our unique style and cherished memories.
