What truly unites Robert, Olivia, and me in shared enjoyment these days is our stunning, newly completed playroom! It’s a space that has been utterly transformed, moving from cluttered and uninspiring to bright, organized, and endlessly inviting.

Today marks the grand reveal of our playroom, the culmination of an intense six-week journey as part of the One Room Challenge. It’s truly astounding how quickly we managed to bring this vision to life. It’s hard to believe we lived with such pervasive toy clutter and a random, misplaced office chair for so long. The contrast is truly remarkable, showcasing the power of strategic design and smart storage solutions.
This revamped space is not only visually appealing but also incredibly functional. The removal of the chaotic mess has brought a renewed sense of calm and clarity, making it a joy to spend time in.

Designing Our Dream Playroom: Blending Modern & Farmhouse Styles
From the moment we moved into this house, I envisioned installing crisp, white built-in shelves in this room – a dedicated spot for family relaxation and entertainment. However, my love for rustic farmhouse aesthetics presented a delightful design challenge: how to seamlessly blend the clean lines of modern style with the warm, inviting charm of farmhouse decor. The “aha!” moment arrived when I discovered Shades of Blue Interiors’ wood wall idea, which perfectly married these two styles.
The Statement Wood Plank Wall and Built-in Storage
Our initial plan for a super-budget-friendly repurposed fence fell through, but we found an even better alternative: tongue and groove rustic style boards from Lowe’s. While a bit more expensive, the peace of mind knowing we wouldn’t have to worry about mold or dry rot on our wall was priceless. This wood wall now serves as a beautiful, textural focal point, grounding the room with a rustic touch.
Above the television, I hung a captivating cut-out “adventure” sign. It’s absolutely perfect, adding a whimsical touch that speaks to the spirit of a playroom and encourages imaginative exploration.
For accessible and stylish toy storage, I discovered these fantastic wooden crates on sale for under $10 each. A quick spray paint with Rustoleum Winter Gray and stenciled numbers transformed them into charming, functional pieces. This DIY approach proved significantly more cost-effective than many other basket or crate storage options on the market, proving that budget-friendly solutions don’t compromise on style.
Undoubtedly, the most significant investment in the room was our IKEA hack built-in shelves, but every penny was absolutely worth it. The genius of adding doors to the lower half lies in its ability to cleverly conceal toys and board games, maintaining a tidy appearance while keeping them easily accessible for Olivia whenever she wants to dive into playtime.
Decorating these expansive shelves was surprisingly simple, as I primarily utilized toys Olivia already owned. Her building blocks and musical instruments found a stylish home in Hocking jars, which I sourced from Walmart. While I initially sought large plastic or acrylic jars without much luck, these glass jars work beautifully, and Robert and I are always happy to help her retrieve her treasures for play. We also crafted a few cork board picture frames, providing an ever-changing gallery for Olivia’s latest preschool artwork. Adding a touch of vintage charm, I stumbled upon this adorable cage fan on eBay for a mere $8!
The Dual-Purpose Desk Area: Work & Play
Knowing the importance of both creative play and focused work, I identified this half wall as the perfect spot for a pair of desks – one for Olivia and one for me. This setup allows me to comfortably blog or craft while she engages in her coloring books or practices her reading and writing skills, fostering a shared creative environment.
The desks themselves are a testament to creative repurposing. We found a square kitchen table on Craigslist, which we ingeniously cut in half and mounted directly onto the wall. This not only created two functional workspaces but also added an unexpected element of clever design. I’m still on the lookout for other pieces of furniture I can cut in half to achieve equally fabulous results! A very thoughtful friend gifted me this unique “S” from an old Starbucks sign, a fun piece of repurposed decor. The rest of the desk accessories were simply items I already had on hand, emphasizing our commitment to budget-friendly styling.
Window Treatments and Seating Solutions
On the window side of the room, I created these charming pom-pom curtains, inspired by high-end designs from Anthropologie and Pottery Barn, by skillfully repurposing IKEA sheers. This DIY project added a playful yet sophisticated touch, perfectly aligning with our eclectic farmhouse aesthetic.
To complement the curtains, I hung them on a stylish galvanized pipe-look curtain rod, a fantastic find from Target that adds an industrial farmhouse edge. Olivia’s existing play table on this side of the room also received a quick, refreshing makeover, integrating it seamlessly into the new design.
After much deliberation, Robert and I decided the most practical and budget-friendly solution for our old tan couch was to sell it and replace it with a white IKEA Ektorp. The sale of our old sofa generated $200, covering a significant portion of the cost for the new one. While it might seem like IKEA sponsored this room, we simply found their versatile and affordable pieces ideal for our vision! The best part about the Ektorp is its washable slipcover. Should Olivia ever get it dirty (a likely scenario in a playroom!), I can simply toss it in the wash with some bleach, and it will emerge fresh and clean – or so I optimistically hope!
Personalized Touches: Storybook Art & Whimsical Decor
Robert and I have often created engineer print/wood-framed signs in the past, but for this room, I took it a step further. I used colored engineer prints and crafted the wording on Picmonkey to design these oversized storybook pages. The result is utterly charming, and I honestly can’t express how much I adore them! I always strive to infuse a touch of sentimentality into every room makeover, and these storybook pages certainly fulfill that desire, making them incredibly special.
To add a whimsical touch, I strung up this delightful felted pom-pom garland. Its playful appearance gives the room a truly Dr. Seuss-ish vibe, full of imagination and cheer.
The entire color scheme for this room was initially inspired by a collection of sofa pillows I found on sale at Target. I deliberately steered clear of overly girly pinks and purples, opting instead for a balanced palette of blue and yellow, which felt both safe and wonderfully fun. This combination brings a vibrant energy to the space without being overwhelming.
After a prolonged search for the perfect rug, this striped cotton rug fit beautifully into our design scheme. It’s incredibly soft – so much so that I’m often tempted to wrap myself up in it like a blanket burrito! The entire family, including Olivia, Robert, and I, have absolutely loved sprawling out on it for lively block-building competitions and fun-filled board game nights. It has become a central gathering spot for family activities.
We finally upgraded our plain, builder-grade light fixture to this charming mint-colored ceiling fan from Hunter Fan. Doesn’t it just scream “playroom” to you? I adore its blend of modern design with a subtle vintage vibe, perfectly complementing the room’s eclectic style.
Budget Breakdown & Final Reflections on Our Playroom
Now for the grand finale – the budget breakdown! We encountered a few unexpected hurdles during the process, particularly with our wood wall and sofa slipcover plans. These little “snafus” meant we ended up spending approximately $450 more than our initial projection. A bit of a gulp moment, I admit!
However, despite these unforeseen costs, we remained committed to furnishing this playroom as economically as possible. By prioritizing budget-friendly DIY projects and diligently shopping for sales whenever we could, we managed to bring our extensive wish list to life without completely breaking the bank. Every decision was carefully considered to balance aesthetics with affordability.

Gulp. That number certainly escalated quickly! However, considering this is one of the last large rooms in our entire house to undergo a complete transformation (aside from our laundry room and closets), we view it as a valuable investment in our home and family life. I suppose 2017 will be dedicated to mastering the art of massive organization!
Well, at least that’s the plan, unless our little whirlwind, Olivia, has other ideas!
It is absolutely astonishing how profoundly completing this room has positively impacted our family. Before this makeover, our evenings often consisted of parking ourselves in front of the TV, indulging in a couple of hours of Netflix before bedtime. Now, we consciously choose to spend our evenings completely unplugged, playing together in this vibrant, inviting space. It’s a room we genuinely enjoy, and that makes all the hard work, every DIY project, and every budget decision, unequivocally worth it.
I’m not entirely sure what definitive style label best describes this room – perhaps eclectic? Farmhouse? Modern? My aspiration was a blend that felt a little like Joanna Gaines meets Emily Henderson, combining rustic charm with sophisticated, livable design. All I truly know is that I absolutely, unequivocally love it with a big puffy heart! And isn’t that what truly matters most?
