Creating the Dream Playroom: Our Inspiring Transformation Journey
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our playroom makeover is nearing completion! For those who’ve been following our journey on Instagram Stories, you might have caught a glimpse of some of the final touches we’ve been working on. If you missed it, you can always find the highlights on my IG feed profile, showcasing the exciting progress we’ve made in transforming this space into a vibrant and functional children’s play area.
Bringing this vision to life has been a labor of love, and we’re excited to share every detail of how this once ordinary room evolved into a truly magical kids’ playroom. Before we dive into the grand reveal of the “after” pictures, let’s take a little trip down memory lane to truly appreciate how far we’ve come.
The Transformation Journey: From Chaos to Creative Play Space
The Before: A Blank Canvas Awaiting Adventure

Every great transformation begins with a “before,” and our playroom was no exception. It was a space with potential, but it lacked the charm, organization, and inspiring elements we envisioned for a child’s creative hub. Clutter was a constant battle, and we knew it was time for a significant change to create a more harmonious environment for play and learning. Our goal was to design a playroom that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, encouraging independent play and easy cleanup for our daughter, Olivia.
Mid-Transformation: The Foundation of Functionality
The first major step in our DIY playroom project involved a fresh coat of paint and the ambitious IKEA built-in bookcase installation. This phase laid the groundwork for the organized and inviting space we dreamed of. The built-ins were a game-changer, providing ample storage and a custom look that elevated the entire room. Choosing the right paint colors, Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee for the walls and Simply White for the trim, created a bright and airy backdrop, allowing other design elements to truly pop. This intermediate stage, though still a work in progress, already hinted at the incredible potential of the space.

The Near-Completion: A Playroom Transformed
And now, for the moment you’ve been waiting for! While technically still an “in progress” photo, the room has truly blossomed into a captivating children’s play area. The transformation is remarkable, showcasing a beautiful blend of design, functionality, and thoughtful organization. This stage highlights the culmination of our efforts, from clever toy storage solutions to inviting play zones. Every element has been carefully selected to foster creativity, independence, and joy for years to come. The room now breathes a sense of calm and order, a stark contrast to its initial state, and is a testament to the power of a well-executed playroom makeover.

Smart Toy Organization for a Stress-Free Playroom
One of the most life-changing additions to our playroom has been those incredible baskets with their easy-to-read labels. I cannot emphasize enough how much peace of mind they’ve brought into this space. Walking into the playroom now feels calming and refreshing. All week long, Olivia has been actively involved in putting away her toys, and what’s even better is her excitement about reading the labels and knowing exactly where everything belongs. This simple yet effective toy storage solution has empowered her to take ownership of her space and develop excellent organizational habits.
It’s truly amazing to see this level of engagement from a child! The labeled baskets have not only tidied up the playroom but have also fostered a sense of responsibility and independence in Olivia. This system demonstrates that with thoughtful design, even tidying up can become an enjoyable and educational activity for kids.
Thoughtful Design Elements: From Lighting to Seating
A Radiant Focal Point: The IKEA Light Fixture
Adding to our beautifully orderly basket system, we recently installed this fantastic light fixture from IKEA, which we snagged for just $60. I adore how its natural, woody tones perfectly complement the existing baskets and the top of our built-in bookcases, creating a cohesive and warm aesthetic. Despite its sophisticated look, it retains a youthful and fun vibe, making it an ideal choice for a kids’ playroom. The fixture provides ample lighting, essential for both play and creative activities, while also serving as a charming focal point in the room. It’s amazing how a single piece can pull an entire space together, enhancing both its functionality and style.

The Perfect Play Table: Adjustable and Versatile
Right around New Year’s, I discovered this fantastic play table from Land of Nod, marked down by an incredible 50%! I couldn’t resist such an amazing deal, especially for a key piece in our kids’ playroom. They only had a dark brown table in stock, but a quick refresh with white spray paint transformed it into exactly what we needed, perfectly matching our light and airy decor. This simple DIY paint job saved us a significant amount, bringing the total savings to $125.
The best feature of this play table is its changeable legs, allowing it to grow with Olivia. This ensures it will be a staple in her creative adventures for years to come, adapting to her height as she gets older. I also added a paper roll holder to attach to it, so she can draw and color to her heart’s content – an activity she genuinely loves and does almost every single day. This adjustable play table is not just a piece of furniture; it’s a versatile hub for creativity, homework, and endless imaginative play.

Sturdy and Stylish Seating: Miniature Bistro Chairs
To complement the play table, I found these charming chairs on sale at Target, also during the New Year’s holiday sales – a fantastic time for grabbing great deals! These miniature French bistro chairs are not only incredibly stylish but also made of metal, making them super sturdy and durable. We anticipate they will last us for a very long time, standing up to the rigors of enthusiastic playtime. Their classic design adds a touch of elegance to the playroom, proving that children’s furniture can be both practical and chic. They complete the dedicated art and craft area, inviting Olivia to sit down and unleash her creativity comfortably.

Vintage Charm: Repurposed Sugar Mold for Art Supplies
A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon this wonderful old sugar mold in an antique store, and I immediately knew it would be perfect for our playroom. Repurposing vintage finds adds so much character and a unique touch to any space. We’ve filled it with markers and colored pencils, making it a functional and aesthetically pleasing way to organize art supplies. It’s a small detail, but it brings a lovely rustic charm to the creative corner of the room, keeping essential drawing tools easily accessible and neatly contained. This piece embodies our approach to playroom decor: blending practical organization with unique, meaningful items.

Personalized Decor: DIY Storybook Art
Finally, we’ve hung up the heartwarming DIY storybook art that we crafted for Olivia’s playroom in our old house. Bringing these cherished pieces into her new space adds a wonderful personal touch and a sense of continuity. Each frame tells a story, literally, and contributes to the imaginative atmosphere we’ve aimed to create. DIY art is not only budget-friendly but also infuses a room with unique character and sentimental value that store-bought decor simply cannot replicate. These vibrant pieces are a constant reminder of the magic of storytelling and creativity.

Anticipating the Final Touches: Our Next DIY Project
With most of the major projects complete, we now have just a few detailed tasks remaining on the other walls of this amazing playroom. This upcoming weekend, I’m particularly excited about tackling the orange brick wall – the plan is for it to receive a beautiful limewash treatment. This will soften its appearance and integrate it more seamlessly into the room’s serene color scheme, adding texture without overwhelming the space. Any volunteers for this project? While it’s a bit of work, the final effect promises to be stunning, bringing an extra layer of charm and sophistication to our newly renovated kids’ playroom.
