Transforming Teenage Girl Bedrooms: Inspiring Design Styles for Every Personality, from Preppy to Japandi Cottage.
Embarking on a bedroom makeover for a teenager is an exciting journey, and for us, it’s a mission to craft spaces that truly resonate with young, evolving personalities. Today, we’re thrilled to unveil the first of two significant teenage girl bedroom design projects we’re tackling in the coming weeks, promising fresh inspiration for anyone looking to refresh a teen’s private sanctuary.
You might recall the extensive rec room transformation Robert and I completed last winter for our wonderful neighbors, the Carney family. That project was a testament to how thoughtfully designed spaces can truly enhance family life and create cherished memories.

Terra and TJ Carney are an incredible couple with nine children, five of whom are teen or pre-teen girls currently sharing just two bedrooms. This presents a unique and exciting design challenge: creating shared spaces that are not only functional and stylish but also deeply reflective of each girl’s sweet, distinct, and sometimes fierce personality. Our goal is to infuse individuality into every corner, making these shared rooms feel uniquely and beautifully their own.
As part of our creative process, I brainstormed numerous teenage girl bedroom ideas, developing detailed mood boards to explore various aesthetic directions. I thought it would be incredibly valuable to share these mood boards with you, especially if you have teen girls in your life who might be dreaming of a room spruce-up. These concepts are designed to inspire and offer practical solutions for shared spaces, proving that even a small room can become a vibrant personal retreat.
By the way, if you’re curious about our design process and want to master the art of visual planning, you can see our comprehensive tutorial on how to make a mood board here. It’s a truly empowering skill that becomes addicting once you learn the ropes, allowing you to visualize and refine your design concepts with clarity and confidence!
Now, let’s dive into these captivating design concepts. Which one captures your imagination the most?
Shared Teenage Girl Bedroom Ideas for Creative and Functional Spaces
Designing a shared bedroom for teenage girls requires a delicate balance of personal space, individual style, and practical functionality. Each of these ideas aims to address these needs while delivering a cohesive and inspiring aesthetic. Our focus is on maximizing space, providing comfort, and creating an environment where each girl can thrive, study, and relax.

Teenage Girl Bedroom Idea 1: Preppy Eclectic – A Vibrant Blend of Classic Charm and Playful Personality
The Preppy Eclectic style is perfect for teenage girls who appreciate classic, organized aesthetics but also crave a touch of individuality and whimsical flair. This design concept blends traditional elements with unexpected pops of color, unique textures, and personalized decor, creating a space that feels both polished and profoundly personal. Think bold stripes, gingham patterns, and vibrant accents mixed with timeless furniture and art. It’s about celebrating individuality within a structured, cheerful framework.
Key to this style, especially for a shared room, is smart space utilization. A Triple L-Shaped Bunk Bed serves as an ingenious solution, maximizing sleeping capacity while creating distinct sleeping zones for each girl. This type of bed arrangement often allows for integrated storage or study nooks underneath, making it highly functional. The addition of a Striped Wallpaper provides a crisp, preppy backdrop, while an inviting Reading Chair nestled in a corner offers a cozy escape. For added functionality and to maintain a clutter-free environment, a Chalkboard Murphy Desk is a brilliant space-saving choice, providing a dedicated study area that can be folded away when not in use. This concept ensures each girl has a comfortable place to study, read, and relax without encroaching on shared areas.
The bedding, such as Coral Block Print Sheets paired with a Gingham Pillow, introduces a playful yet cohesive color scheme that feels both energetic and comforting. Practical elements like Wall Lamps provide individual lighting for reading without disturbing others. Decorative touches, such as a Faux Monstera Plant and various art prints – from a Castle Coast Art Print to a Matisse Print – layer in the eclectic vibe, allowing for diverse tastes to coexist harmoniously. The possibility of a DIY Fluted Dresser (using an IKEA Hemnes dresser and pole wrap) adds a custom, high-end look on a budget, perfectly embodying the creative spirit of this style. This blend of classic patterns, functional furniture, and personalized decor creates an inspiring and highly organized space for energetic and creative teens.

Teenage Girl Bedroom Idea 2: Blushing Boho – Serene Comfort with Earthy Tones and Playful Textures
For the free-spirited teenager who loves a relaxed, artistic, and globally inspired aesthetic, the Blushing Boho bedroom offers a serene and inviting sanctuary. This style embraces soft, warm tones – particularly various shades of blush and terracotta – combined with natural materials, lush textures, and an overall sense of calm and creativity. It’s a comfortable, unpretentious style that invites lounging and self-expression, making it an excellent choice for a shared space where comfort and personal corners are paramount.
Starting with a foundational color like Benjamin Moore Cloud White on the walls provides a bright, airy canvas, allowing the warmer elements to truly shine. A Washable Rug is a practical and stylish choice for high-traffic shared rooms, adding texture and warmth underfoot. For sleeping arrangements, elegant Black Spindle Headboards provide a touch of classic sophistication, beautifully contrasting with the lighter tones and preventing the room from feeling too sweet. Each bed can be personalized with cozy elements like a soft Quilt Set, layered with a comforting Blanket and a plush Throw Pillow, ensuring each girl has her own snug retreat.
The boho aesthetic is completed with natural elements and carefully chosen decor. A stunning Pendant Light made from sedge adds an organic touch, while Hanging Planters and a Faux Plant in Basket bring in lush greenery, creating a vibrant, living atmosphere without the maintenance. For storage and display, Etagere Bookshelves provide an open, airy feel, perfect for showcasing books, art, and personal treasures. A stylish Reading Chair and a decorative Black Rattan Mirror further enhance the relaxed, eclectic charm. Artwork such as elegant Horse Art pieces and framed Butterfly Art add subtle, nature-inspired motifs, making this Blushing Boho room a truly dreamy and personal haven for any teen.

Teenage Girl Bedroom Idea 3: Japandi Cottage – Minimalist Serenity with Rustic Warmth
The Japandi Cottage aesthetic offers a harmonious blend of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian warmth, infused with a touch of rustic cottage charm. This style is perfect for teens who appreciate clean lines, natural materials, and a calm, uncluttered environment. It emphasizes functionality, comfort, and a deep connection to nature, creating a tranquil yet inviting space. For a shared bedroom, this aesthetic promotes a sense of peace and order, allowing each resident to find their quiet corner within a beautifully cohesive design.
The foundation of this design begins with a soothing wall color like Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog, which provides a grounding, nature-inspired backdrop. Curtains in a complementary neutral tone enhance the serene atmosphere. Sturdy Black Spindle Beds offer a classic touch and a visual anchor, providing individual sleeping areas that are both comfortable and stylish. Adjacent to each bed, a simple Nightstand with a beautiful Rattan Lamp brings in natural textures and warm lighting, perfect for evening reading.
To enhance the minimalist yet cozy feel, a soft Rug anchors the space, while Hanging Planters and a well-placed Faux Plant introduce organic elements that align with both Japandi and cottage styles. For study and creative pursuits, a streamlined Leaning Desk paired with a classic High Back Windsor Chair offers a dedicated workspace without overwhelming the room. Additional comfort is provided by a chic Boucle Chair, creating a cozy spot for relaxation. Art pieces like Linear Horse Art, Horse Meadow Art, and delicate Butterfly Art add touches of beauty and personality, grounding the room in a gentle, natural aesthetic. This Japandi Cottage design masterfully blends simplicity with warmth, providing a serene and highly functional shared bedroom for thoughtful and peace-loving teens.
