Key Financial Lessons From Our Remodel

Our remodel was an unexpected project, presenting us with a steep learning curve. Working with contractors isn’t new to us, but this project highlighted the importance of thorough preparation and proactive financial planning.

The most crucial lesson? Communicate openly with contractors about your budget from day one. Always ask for detailed cost estimates for each phase of the project.

Unique Factors Influencing Our Bathroom Remodel Cost

Several factors made our remodel unique:

  • Supply Chain Issues: Material price increases due to supply chain disruptions significantly impacted the overall cost.
  • Insurance Coverage: Since the remodel stemmed from water damage, a portion of the renovation was covered by homeowner’s insurance. This allowed us to include upgrades we had been postponing.
  • Time Constraints: The unexpected nature of the project and the need to relocate during the summer months limited our ability to take on DIY tasks.

DIY Projects to Lower Bathroom Remodel Costs

To reduce costs, we completed some finishing tasks ourselves, once we could move back into our house. Robert and I installed the picture frame molding, mirrors, vanity hardware, toilet paper holder, towel ring, hooks, and shelves. We also handled some caulking and patching.

Bathroom Remodel Total Cost – $29,125.15

This was a significant project, and while overwhelming at times, it has prepared us for future remodeling endeavors. The final cost wasn’t finalized until shortly before completion, highlighting the importance of early and consistent communication with contractors.

Despite the challenges, we are incredibly happy with the final result of the bathroom remodel.
