Creating a Classic Christmas Foyer: Simple Decor and Meaningful Moments
Hollywood may try, but the magic of classic Christmas movies remains unmatched. Think of the timeless favorites: It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, and White Christmas. They embody a warmth and simplicity that’s simply irreplaceable. Perhaps it’s because no one quite delivers like Bing Crosby, no one can portray the full spectrum of human emotions like James Stewart, and no Santa seems quite as real as Edmund Gwenn.
This same feeling of nostalgia and comfort recently washed over me as I decorated our foyer for the holidays. It’s a space that’s become a reflection of what truly matters during this season.

There’s something about the presence of our family photographs on the walls, captured in timeless black and white, that makes them feel even more alive. The simple, elegant beauty of the images draw you in.
The antique Victorian chest, a lucky find from Craigslist, sparks curiosity about its past. What stories does it hold? What other homes has it been a part of? Its weathered finish speaks of history and character.
And then there’s the scent of fresh cedar and pine, which instantly transports me back to Christmases past. I’m reminded of the anticipation of the holidays, the excitement of fumbling down the stairs in my pajamas on that magical morning. The scent itself is a powerful memory trigger, connecting me to a time when wonder was effortless.

The magic of Christmas, years later, looks different. It’s no longer just about the presents under the tree or the treats on the table. It’s about something far more profound.
The most cherished gifts nowadays can’t be found in a store. They don’t arrive wrapped with a bow. The greatest gift is simply being present.

This year, I don’t desire a single gift wrapped under the tree.
My heart is full just thinking of the moments that await: Snuggling with Olivia, uninterrupted, while she still lets me. Having conversations with Robert, talking about everything and nothing because we can. Making time stand still for a day, with only one thing on the agenda: savoring our family.

With that in mind, I brought that same sentiment to our foyer. I unearthed a tarnished candelabra that belonged to my grandmother, a way of remembering her during this special time of year, when I long to hear her laugh.
I lit the Advent candles and surrounded them with fresh tree clippings, embracing the St. Lucia tradition as a way of keeping my Swedish heritage close.

It’s a simple display, but that’s exactly how I like it.
This year, less is more, in both presents and in our home. Because the real secret is knowing you already have everything. Because when we have each other, we truly have it all.
