The Ultimate Guide to Small Laundry Room Organization
For weeks, I’ve been dedicated to meticulously organizing every drawer and cabinet in our laundry room. And let me tell you, this room is a powerhouse for our family, juggling multiple roles.
During the planning phase, my primary goal was clear:
Optimize every square inch.

The transformation is remarkable from its initial state…

This space isn’t merely for washing clothes. It serves as our cleaning headquarters, a utility closet, a storage area, a pet station, and a place to keep household tools – all consolidated into one area. Consequently, the layout demanded functionality and efficiency.
The essential features incorporated:
- Five cabinets
- Five drawers
- A discreet cleaning cupboard
- A pull-out trash container
- Wall-mounted storage
- A versatile countertop
And then, I enthusiastically embraced my label maker to ensure everything was neatly identified.

Today, I’m sharing a detailed walkthrough of how each space functions within our organized laundry room.
Welcome to the tour.

A Detailed Look at the Cabinets
Cabinet 1 – The Laundry Hub
This cabinet houses everything we use daily for laundry tasks.

What’s Inside:
- Baskets with gold labels for sorting and storing laundry soaps, detergents, and cleaning agents.
- A battery organizer to keep batteries readily available and prevent them from being misplaced.
- A storage bin for flashlights, ensuring we always have them when needed.
- Shelf space for paper towels and tissues, so they are easily accessible.
Cabinet 2 – Seasonal Storage & Utility Area
This cabinet has evolved into our designated seasonal and utility zone.

What’s Inside:
- Pool towels, rolled up and organized using an acrylic divider.
- A basket labeled for sunscreen to keep it all in one spot.
- A grocery bag organizer, helping to recycle and keep grocery bags tidy.
- Shelf space for a soft cooler and beach bag for spontaneous trips.
- Labeled baskets dedicated to storing different types of light bulbs.
This cabinet provides easy access to essential items for outdoor activities and everyday needs.
Cabinet 3 – Storing Seldom-Used Items
This cabinet is designed for items that aren’t needed daily but are still essential to keep organized.

Each category is neatly housed in labeled acrylic bins:
- Power cords (using power cord bundlers to keep them tangle-free)
- Chargers
- Party supplies
- Candles
- Air fresheners
No more frantic searches through cluttered drawers to locate a specific charger or item.

Cabinet 4 – The Concealed Hamper
Our corner cabinet houses a large basket that acts as an overflow laundry hamper.
It’s a simple, functional, accessible, and invisible solution for managing extra laundry.

Cabinet 5 – The Cleaning Command Center
This area is dedicated to our larger cleaning equipment.
What’s Inside:
- Vacuum cleaner
- Steam mop
- Cordless stick vacuum
- Acrylic bins for storing cleaning cloths and scrubbers
- Shelf storage for:
- Small handheld steam cleaner
- Upholstery cleaner
- Iron
All our deep cleaning tools are centralized, making them easily accessible when needed.

The Innovative Hidden Slide-Out Cleaning Cupboard
The hidden cleaning cupboard might be my favorite feature in the entire laundry room.
Tucked away in a narrow gap between the wall and the cabinetry, this slim pull-out cupboard stores:
On Hooks
- Mop
- Broom
- Duster
- Squeegee
- Dustpan & hand broom
In Vertical Slots
- All-purpose cleaners
- Bathroom cleaners
- Floor cleaners
- Cleaning essentials like vinegar and baking soda
Say goodbye to bulky cleaning tools leaning against walls; everything has its designated place.
Drawer Organization Overview

Large Pull-Out Drawer – Trash Management
A concealed pull-out system keeps the trash can neatly hidden while maintaining accessibility.
Drawer Stack (5 Drawers)
Each drawer serves a specific purpose – no “junk drawer” allowed! I incorporated flatware trays in each drawer to maintain order.

Drawer 1 – Office Essentials
- Stationery
- Pens & stamps
- Scissors
- Post-it notes
Drawer 2 – Craft & Household Supplies
- Hot glue
- Scotch tape & shipping tape
- Glue
- Command strips
- Zip ties

Drawer 3 – Essential Household Tools
- Measuring tape
- Screwdrivers
- Pliers
- Utility knives
- Paint touch-up pens
- Screws & hardware
Drawer 4 – Miscellaneous Items
- Label maker & labels
- Matches & lighters

Drawer 5 – Pet Supplies
- Dog treats in lidded bins that fit perfectly inside IKEA drawers
- Grooming brushes
- Collar & leash
- Heartworm medicine
- Dog sweaters
- Poop bags
- Portable dog water bowl
- Grooming supplies
Lola has already identified her treat drawer, officially making it her favorite spot in the house. These blue and white chinoiserie pet food bowls are undeniably adorable.

Optimizing Wall Storage
To maintain the room’s flexibility and functionality, we included:
- A wall-mounted drying rack
- An inset ironing board cabinet
Both fold away when not in use, ensuring a clutter-free environment. We also plan to add this wall-mounted collapsible rack to hang ironed clothes, because what’s a room makeover without a small project left to complete?

The Countertop Arrangement
We installed a removable countertop above the washer and dryer for easy access to the water hookups. Function always comes first.

On the Counter:
- Apothecary jars for:
- Powder laundry detergent
- Scent booster beads
- Wool dryer balls
- A small jar for loose change

- A small lidded basket for collecting stray socks.
- A mini lamp to add a soft, inviting glow to the room.
- A tall tree strategically placed to conceal the breaker panel (although we upgraded to this aesthetic breaker panel which is quite pleasing even without the tree).

The Ingenious Hidden Step Stool: A Small Space Victory
One of my favorite function-first details nearly didn’t happen, but I’m so grateful it did.
After installing the lower cabinets, we noticed a narrow gap wide enough to accommodate a wooden fold-up step stool. Instead of covering the gap, we turned it into a storage solution.
The stool now remains tucked away until needed, allowing for quick access to upper cabinets.
Sometimes, leveraging a space’s unique quirks yields the best storage solutions. This small addition has proven to be one of the most valuable upgrades in the laundry room.

Maintaining a Clutter-Free Environment
With ample storage, it’s easy for a space to feel overwhelmed, so I’ve prioritized concealment.
- DIY no-sew gathered toile fabric behind the glass cabinet doors.
- Striped café curtains on the lower cabinet to hide the hamper basket (as a swinging door was not practical in the small space).
These additions maintain a soft, calming, and intentional feel, preventing the room from feeling like an overstuffed storage closet.

Key Factors for the Room’s Success
This laundry room’s exceptional functionality is due to:
- Each item having a designated spot.
- Categories being grouped logically.
- Daily-use items being easily accessible.
- Bulky items being hidden but accessible.
- Visual clutter being minimized.

This organized room significantly streamlines the entire household.
When laundry, cleaning supplies, tools, pet supplies, and daily household needs are efficiently managed, life feels noticeably easier.
