Yes, there were a couple of trips to the pumpkin patch with a wagon piled high. Yes, there was dirt in every corner of my car thanks to those overflowing mums. But honestly? No regrets whatsoever! This year, I decided to fully embrace the joy of fall. Pumpkins equal happiness, right?

DIY Fall Porch Projects

Here are a few easy DIY projects to elevate your fall porch decor.

DIY Windowpane Check Welcome Mat

I recently created a DIY windowpane check welcome mat, inspired by a similar style I found at Anthropolgie. It’s a quick and easy project that makes a big impact. You can easily make one for your porch.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A plain coir welcome mat (a budget-friendly option!).
  • Frog Tape (or painter’s tape).
  • Black acrylic paint.

Here’s how to make your own windowpane check welcome mat:

  1. Arrange Frog Tape on the mat, creating a grid pattern.
  2. Lightly pounce black acrylic paint onto the exposed coir sections. Avoid using too much paint.
  3. Carefully remove the tape and let the paint dry completely.

This welcome mat looks fantastic layered on top of my DIY stenciled porch floor.

My DIY eucalyptus feather wreath, made from recycled materials, is still hanging strong, adding a touch of natural beauty. I also spray painted some inexpensive plastic planters to mimic aged copper, adding a little metallic element to the mix.

Tips for Decorating Your Fall Porch Steps

Here’s how to create a welcoming and balanced fall porch display:

  1. Embrace Symmetry: Purchase pairs of everything! (For example, two large white mums, two medium orange mums, two medium red mums, and two small white mums). Place them opposite each other on the steps for a symmetrical, polished look.
  2. Pumpkins as Fillers: Scatter and stack pumpkins of varying sizes and colors between the potted mums to fill in the gaps and create visual interest.
  3. Add Greenery: Include a couple of pots of flowering kale in the front.
  4. Complete the Look: Finish it off with a seasonal welcome mat and a door wreath.

Have you started decorating your porch for fall? Have you carved any pumpkins? I’m doing my best to keep my mums alive, but as a self-proclaimed “plant mama,” I have to admit I’m a little nervous! Happy Fall!
