Get ready to be inspired! We’re absolutely thrilled to unveil a recent powder room transformation that brings a bright, fresh California Casual decor style to life, all achieved with smart budget finds and a simple DIY shiplap installation. This project was a labor of love for a dear friend, proving that even the smallest spaces can make a huge statement.
Last year, our family connected with Regan’s wonderful preschool teacher, who had recently moved from California. Her son quickly became best friends with our Olivia, forming a special bond just before the pandemic. When she later bought a townhouse needing a touch of warmth and personality, we eagerly volunteered to give her powder room a much-needed refresh as a heartfelt thank you for her incredible support over the past year. While she was away at school, we secretly took over her home, ready to work our magic!

Our journey began when Better Homes & Gardens presented us with an exciting challenge: to revitalize a space using a new-to-us decorating style. Instantly, we knew that embracing a California Casual vibe for this powder room was the perfect creative direction. We’re delighted to announce our participation in a monthly design challenge, showcasing designer styling ideas for various spaces on a modest budget, all while utilizing fantastic Better Homes & Gardens products available at Walmart. If you haven’t seen our initial mood board vision for this space, you might be wondering what exactly “California Casual” entails. Let’s break down the key characteristics of this sought-after design aesthetic:
Understanding California Casual Style: Effortless Elegance
- Earthy Color Palette: Think warm neutrals like sandy beiges, soft whites, muted greens, terracotta, and deep browns that evoke a sense of grounding and nature.
- Light, Open, Airy Spaces: The style prioritizes maximizing natural light and creating an uncluttered feel, promoting a serene and expansive atmosphere.
- White/Off-White Walls: A staple for brightness and as a clean canvas that allows natural textures and colors to pop, enhancing the overall airy feel.
- Neutral Upholstery: Furniture in shades of cream, grey, or tan often features natural fabrics like linen or cotton, offering comfort without overpowering the space.
- Light Wood Tones: Incorporating light oak, ash, or natural maple for furniture and accents brings warmth and an organic touch, complementing the neutral palette.
- Lots of Plants: Greenery is essential for bringing life, freshness, and a connection to the outdoors, creating a vibrant and inviting environment.
- Handmade Pottery & Planters: Unique, artisan-crafted pieces add character and a bespoke touch, reinforcing the natural and authentic feel of the style.
- Natural, Organic Materials: Prioritizing elements like rattan, jute, linen, wool, concrete, and stone that contribute to a textural richness and a calming, tactile experience.
- Mid-Century Modern Furniture Shapes: Clean lines, tapered legs, and minimalist forms from the Mid-Century Modern era provide a sophisticated, timeless elegance.
- Ethnic Vintage Textiles: Adding global-inspired rugs, throw pillows, and tapestries introduces depth, pattern, and a sense of wanderlust, often with rich textures and subtle colors.
This aesthetic has undoubtedly graced countless high-end interior design accounts across social media, offering a sophisticated yet relaxed look that resonates deeply with modern sensibilities. Now, discover how we achieved this aspirational look using smart finds from Walmart!
Before: A Glimpse of the Past

It’s truly astonishing how much a few thoughtful changes can transform a space! This room now feels completely new, vibrant, and incredibly inviting.

One of the most impactful, yet budget-friendly, changes was the installation of vertical shiplap wainscoting around the entire room. This DIY-friendly project immediately added texture, character, and a touch of farmhouse charm that blends seamlessly with the California Casual aesthetic. We then painted over the original gold walls with a crisp, clean white, instantly brightening the space and contributing to a calming, serene atmosphere. The combination of shiplap and fresh white walls created the perfect foundation for our design.

We elevated the functionality and style by replacing the old pedestal sink with this stunning Mid-Century Modern inspired vanity. Not only does it offer much-needed storage, but its sleek lines and warm wood tone perfectly embody the clean aesthetic of California Casual. To introduce a touch of vintage flair and rich texture, we layered in this accent rug, reminiscent of a classic Persian design, which beautifully grounds the space and adds a soft contrast.

To further enhance the natural and organic feel, we thoughtfully incorporated small stoneware touches. This reactive glaze soap dispenser, for example, adds a subtle artisanal element and sophisticated texture to the vanity. Complementing these earthy tones are these plush hand towels, which introduce just enough heathered texture to harmonize with the various shades of gray and white present in the room.

For the wall decor, we opted for a few minimalist art prints nestled within these elegant wooden frames. This choice ensures the art feels modern, clean, and deeply connected to the natural, earthy aesthetic of California Casual. The simplicity of the prints allows them to enhance rather than overwhelm the small space.

To introduce a touch of glamour and a striking contrast against the black metal fixtures, we hung this sophisticated round gold mirror above the vanity. Its circular shape softens the room’s angular elements, while the reflective surface helps to amplify light, making the powder room feel larger and more open.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the other side of the room, which also received a dramatic overhaul.
Before: The Other Side

To maximize vertical space in this compact powder room, we installed a set of practical yet stylish shelves above the toilet. These shelves serve a dual purpose: providing essential small storage for bathroom necessities and offering an opportunity to display charming decorative accents that enhance the overall aesthetic.

Organization is key in a small space, so we utilized these attractive baskets to neatly store extra hand towels and toilet paper, keeping them discreetly within reach. To infuse vibrant life and adhere to the “lots of plants” principle of California Casual, we introduced a faux aloe plant and a realistic faux Pothos plant, elegantly housed in a sleek modern white planter. Faux plants are a fantastic, low-maintenance solution for bathrooms.
A delicate decorative orb added a subtle touch of gold, creating a cohesive visual link with the round gold mirror. Further embracing the earthy aesthetic, a reactive glaze canister and a sandstone organizer were incorporated. These pieces not only provide functional storage but also introduce varying textures and natural tones that are hallmarks of the California Casual style.

On the back of the toilet, a small stoneware tray offers additional, elegant storage for small essentials. The choice of a black toilet paper holder seamlessly integrates with the other black fixtures in the space, creating a cohesive and polished look that ties all the elements together.

And, of course, no bathroom refresh is complete without a delightful fragrance. A clean-smelling candle was the perfect finishing touch, adding an inviting aroma and a cozy ambiance to this newly transformed space.

The transformation is truly remarkable, and we’re incredibly proud of the difference these strategic, budget-conscious changes have made. This project has further cemented our love for the California Casual style, and we’re definitely planning to incorporate even more “Cali Cas” elements into our own home, expanding on the subtle touches we’ve already introduced here and there.

My personal decorating style has certainly evolved over the years. Better Homes & Gardens challenged me to reflect on how my aesthetic has developed in the last decade. It’s hard to believe, but I don’t even have a photo from my college apartment back in 2010, which boasted a bold black, white, and red “Old Hollywood” theme – trust me, it was quite glorious at the time! Haha!
Fast forward to 2014, at our previous house, we gave our guest bathroom a distinctly modern farmhouse look. This project unexpectedly went viral on Pinterest, leading to countless recreations in bathrooms across blogs and social media pages worldwide. It’s still amusing to me, considering its very humble and budget-friendly beginnings.

My core style hasn’t drastically shifted since then; it’s simply become a bit less rustic and more refined, embracing a slightly more sophisticated touch. What I’ve truly learned over the years is the joy of taking risks in decorating. Once you realize there’s nothing to fear from experimentation, the creative possibilities are endless! 😉
Are you drawn to the serene California Casual vibe? Or do you prefer the cozy appeal of modern farmhouse style? Perhaps your taste lies somewhere in between. If you ever feel stuck trying to define your personal aesthetic, we have an older post that can help guide you in the right direction. The most crucial lesson, however, remains: it’s perfectly okay to make decorating mistakes. These experiences are invaluable in helping you discover your true self and unique style. Once you uncover that distinctive aesthetic, your house will genuinely transform into a home – a space that truly reflects you, unlike any other.
