There are stories etched into our hearts, tales we hesitate to share, fearing misinterpretation or judgment. This is one such story—a deeply personal narrative I’ve rehearsed a thousand times in my mind, often doubting whether I’d ever find the courage to click “publish.” Yet, some moments demand a leap of faith, a shared vulnerability that transcends apprehension.
For many months, I wrestled with the decision to unveil this chapter of my life. My unwavering desire has always been to be a beacon of hope and encouragement, never to appear as someone who complains or, conversely, boasts. It is with that intention firmly rooted that I invite you to walk alongside me through this journey.
The Genesis of Struggle: Five Years Ago
For those who have recently joined our community, you might not know the full scope of our beginnings. Just five years ago, my husband, Robert, and I found ourselves in a precarious financial situation. We were, quite simply, broke. I was pregnant, and we were preparing to move into my parents’ spare bedroom, a year into our marriage. My beginner’s teaching salary was our primary lifeline, barely stretching to cover our basic needs, while Robert diligently pursued his college education, supported by the G.I. Bill. During that time, a profound sense of failure weighed heavily on my spirit.

It’s crucial to clarify: my feeling of failure was intensely personal, not a judgment on anyone else’s circumstances. Living with parents is a practical choice for many, and financial wealth is by no means a direct measure of success or worth. However, at 25, I had cultivated a specific vision for my life: owning my first home, establishing a thriving career doing what I loved, and confidently tackling any challenge that arose. This ideal, in my mind, defined what it meant to be a “grown-up.” Life, in its beautiful unpredictability, rarely adheres to our meticulously crafted blueprints.
Finding Grace Amidst Hardship and Family Support
Despite the profound financial struggle, our lives were undeniably rich with love. I cannot adequately express the depth of gratitude we felt for our family’s unwavering support during those financially challenging times. There was never a moment where I wasn’t utterly thankful. When we approached my parents with the daunting news—that we were struggling to pay rent and had a baby on the way—their embrace was immediate and unconditional. We were acutely aware that many in similar predicaments lack such a safety net, and this realization instilled in us a profound sense of humility and appreciation.
The Early Days of Marriage and Unwavering Faith
Our first year of marriage was a continuous lesson in frugality. Robert and I lived from paycheck to paycheck, often finding ourselves in anxious discussions about whether we could manage to cover the utility bills for our tiny one-bedroom apartment. Every dollar was accounted for, every expenditure scrutinized. It was a stressful existence, but it also forged an incredibly strong bond between us, teaching us resilience and resourcefulness.
One of the qualities that first drew me to Robert, and continues to inspire me, is his profound strength in faith. He possesses an inherent confidence, an unwavering spirit that rarely falters, even in the face of daunting adversity. He is fearless, navigating even the most terrifying situations with calm assurance.
I, conversely, have been a lifelong “worry-wart.” By nature, I am a diligent rule-follower, often overly cautious, constantly concerned with offending others, and prone to dwelling on trivial anxieties and worst-case scenarios. Robert is truly my better half in this regard; he is the intrepid one, and together, we create a harmonious balance.
From the very beginning of our marriage, regardless of our meager checking account balance, Robert steadfastly insisted on tithing. This commitment often became a point of contention for me. “We can’t afford to give away any of our paycheck!” I would argue. “We’re barely making ends meet as it is!” It was one of the few recurring arguments we had, though we always managed to contribute what we could, with my participation being far more reluctant than his.
A Season of Growth and Unexpected Blessings
Fast-forward a year: the two of us, soon to be three, moved into my parents’ home. Even then, amidst mounting credit card debt and the dream of our own house, Robert continued to tithe. While I argued less about it, a subtle resentment still simmered within me. That money, I thought, could be directed towards our debt or saved for a down payment, accelerating our departure from my parents’ spare bedroom.
Then, our beautiful daughter, Olivia, was born. The demands of balancing a full-time teaching career, Robert’s final stretch of his Bachelor’s degree, and the immense responsibility of becoming new parents were overwhelming. Yet, it was in this very crucible of challenge that an incredible cascade of grace unfolded. Grace upon grace upon grace.
One of the unexpected, yet undeniable, benefits of raising a newborn while living with your parents? Built-in babysitters. Oh, the sweet luxury of a 30-minute nap after a fussy, sleepless night, made possible by loving grandparents. These small moments of respite were invaluable.
Beyond the immediate relief, those two years under my parents’ roof proved transformative. With their steadfast support, we meticulously paid down our credit card debt. We were able to transition from their home and secure our own house, a dream that once felt unattainable. Robert, with the space and support to focus on his studies, successfully landed a job with excellent benefits, marking a significant turning point for our family.

A New Path: From Teacher to Stay-at-Home Mom and Blogger
Just when we believed our lives had reached a stable, flourishing point, and God’s hand in our turnaround was complete, things took an even more remarkable turn. After settling into our new home for a few months, Robert and I made a momentous decision: I would leave my teaching profession to become a stay-at-home mom. The financial reality of daycare costs, which consumed nearly 75% of my paycheck, combined with the desire to spend my evenings nurturing our little one instead of grading papers, solidified this choice. This decision, while deeply fulfilling, plunged us back into the familiar territory of crunching numbers and finding they simply didn’t add up. Yet, our commitment to prayer and tithing remained unshaken.
We now had a new house, but it was largely empty, devoid of furniture and decoration. Our budget offered no immediate solutions for furnishing it. However, I had our toddler’s precious nap times, a burning desire for a creative outlet amidst the daily routines of highchair clean-ups and snuggly bath times, and a treasure trove of possibilities in the thrift store just down the street. This confluence of need and opportunity sparked something profound within me.
I distinctly recall waking one morning with an unmistakable sense of direction, a clear inner voice urging, “Start a blog, Lauren.” I understand how incredibly unconventional and even bizarre that sounds. If you find it hard to believe, I wouldn’t blame you. But the experience was accompanied by an overwhelming calm, a profound clarity that instantly guided my path. It might sound utterly “cuckoo-house nuts,” but the message resonated as clear as a bell: “Start a blog.”
Building a Home and a Business, One Thrift Find at a Time
And so, I did. That first year, I’m fairly certain my mom was my most devoted reader. Nevertheless, the blog quickly became my sanctuary, my happy place. Over the next three years, little by little, we transformed that initial house into a cherished home. My mind became a relentless churn of thrift store makeover tricks and ingenious budget decorating ideas, each project a labor of love.
What I discovered through this process was a deeper affection for our home than I could ever have imagined if we had simply filled it with pristine, brand-new furniture. Every piece, every transformation, held a piece of our story, a part of my heart and effort. It wasn’t just decor; it was a narrative of resilience and creativity.
Every stroke of a paintbrush, every turn of a screw, taught Robert and me invaluable lessons about our capabilities and strengths. There’s an unparalleled satisfaction in creating something beautiful and new with your own hands, stepping back, and admiring the fruits of such dedicated effort. It’s a fleeting glimpse, perhaps, of the profound joy the Creator Himself might have felt in the beginning.
These revelations and skills were gifts I might never have uncovered had our journey been one of effortless abundance. The challenges of limited resources fostered innovation and a deep appreciation for the art of transformation.

The Journey Continues: Blessings Beyond Expectation
Today, this blog is nearly four years old and has become my full-time career, fulfilling every passion I’ve ever held. We successfully sold that first house for a profit, a tangible reward for all our hard work and creativity. Now, we are incredibly excited to embark on a new chapter in our next home, ready to invest every ounce of our determination into its transformation.
Looking back, our path has unfolded better than we could have ever meticulously planned. We’ve come to understand that without those initial shaky moments in our marriage, without the unexpected detours and daunting challenges, we would not be standing where we are today. Each obstacle was a stepping stone, each struggle a lesson disguised.
Had we not moved in with my parents, the compelling narrative for a blog focused on home transformation might never have materialized. Had I not made the terrifying, faith-filled decision to leave my teaching career to become a stay-at-home mom, this blog would simply not exist. It was precisely these seemingly insurmountable difficulties that paved the way for this unexpected journey.
Moreover, the financial constraints that compelled us to creatively transform our house into a reflection of “us” were fundamental to the blog’s early success. There are countless individuals in the world who share similar struggles with budget and home creation. Every obstacle we encounter in life, I believe, is presented for a profound reason, designed to shape us, teach us, and ultimately, guide us toward our purpose.
Unwavering Faith and Gratitude
Through it all, we continue our practice of tithing, persistently pray for direction, and express our heartfelt gratitude daily for His boundless provision. We thank Him for fueling the abilities He has bestowed upon us, for constantly inspiring us to help others, and for extending grace even in my moments of doubt and worry. I am continually humbled, knowing I am nowhere near worthy of such blessings.
He is always in control, a comforting truth that anchors us. And even if, by some unforeseen turn, everything were to crumble around us one day, His goodness would remain steadfast.
We will never be able to fully repay the immeasurable debt we owe my parents for their unwavering support during those two financially rocky years. In a profound way, I am thankful for that unrepayable debt. It has served as a powerful, real-life metaphor for my relationship with my Savior – for the debt of my life that I can never repay, for the boundless love that pours out from His grace forever. Because, ultimately, love is the conqueror of every battle, every doubt, every fear.
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” – Malachi 3:10
If you’ve journeyed with me through this, quite possibly, the longest post in this blog’s history, I want you to know that I pray for you all every single night. We each face our own silent battles, struggles we rarely bare to the world. But it takes just a little trust and a little faith to conquer them, to navigate through the storms and emerge stronger.
Thank you, from the depths of our hearts, for allowing us the privilege of sharing our lives with you. Our sincere hope is that, in some small way, this story resonates with yours, offering a flicker of hope or a moment of encouragement.
