Dreamy Blue Cottage Guest Bedroom Reveal

Transforming a Dark & Dated Guest Bedroom into a Serene Blue Cottage Retreat on a Budget!

What once felt like a forgotten corner of our home, this guest bedroom has undergone a truly remarkable metamorphosis. Just a few months ago, the space was a stark contrast of black and white, lacking warmth and personality. It was a room that served its purpose but offered little in the way of comfort or inspiration. Today, I am thrilled to unveil a complete transformation, breathing new life into this once dark and dated guest bedroom, turning it into a charming cottage-style haven with serene shades of blue.

Thankfully, the days of a gloomy, uninspired guest room are long behind us. The journey to this refreshed space has been a welcome creative outlet, especially during a period filled with the usual stresses of house listing, hosting garage sales, real estate shopping, and numerous home improvement projects at Lowe’s. This particular makeover, carried out at my parents’ house, became my personal sanctuary and the ultimate form of therapy.

For me, creation is a powerful coping mechanism. When life feels overwhelming, I instinctively turn to painting furniture, styling a room, planning a new design, or simply rearranging existing pieces. This guest bedroom, serving as our temporary home-away-from-home, offered the perfect canvas for such a peaceful retreat. It allowed me to immerse myself in the joy of design and watch a vision come to life, piece by budget-friendly piece.

From the outset, my vision for this room was clear: a calming, inviting space that blended the charm of cottage style with a fresh, modern sensibility. I wanted to incorporate tranquil blue hues to create a serene atmosphere, perfect for guests seeking a restful escape. The challenge was to achieve this beautiful transformation without breaking the bank, relying heavily on DIY projects and savvy second-hand finds.

Designing for Comfort and Functionality

Beyond serving as a temporary haven during our move, this room frequently hosts family visiting from out of town and friends passing through. It also doubles as Olivia’s special room when the grandparents are babysitting, meaning it needed clever storage solutions for her beloved toys. The primary challenge was that the space desperately required entirely new furniture to achieve both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality.

We hit the jackpot by sourcing almost every major piece of furniture from Craigslist, securing incredible deals that allowed us to give them dramatic facelifts. This strategic approach enabled us to furnish the entire room for a remarkable sum of less than $600! For those looking to follow in our footsteps, I’ve compiled my top tips for scoring fantastic furniture deals on Craigslist, ensuring you can find hidden gems too.

DIY Furniture Flips: From Craigslist to Cottage Chic

Our budget-friendly approach relied heavily on transforming second-hand furniture. This charming little armoire was a Craigslist steal at just $40. With a quick but strategic paint job, it was completely reinvented, now serving as the perfect storage solution for all of Olivia’s books and toys, blending seamlessly into the cottage aesthetic. Its new look truly brings a touch of antique elegance to the room.

Adding personal touches, I discovered some old hats tucked away in a closet. One belonged to my grandfather, holding significant sentimental value, while another was a souvenir from Robert and my honeymoon years ago. I simply hung them with Command hooks, instantly adding character and a hint of vintage charm to the wall.

A practical upgrade was replacing the outdated ceiling fan with a more modern and efficient Ocala by Hunter Fan. Given how intensely hot summers can get in our region, a high-quality ceiling fan is an absolute necessity for guest comfort.

Above the bed, this sweet sign from Salted Words, proclaiming “Enter as Guests, Leave as Friends,” instantly caught my eye. It felt as if it were custom-made for a guest bedroom, perfectly articulating the welcoming spirit we aimed to create in this space.

The bed itself was another fantastic Craigslist acquisition, with my parents scoring it for a mere $110. I meticulously gave it a weathered wood finish using a combination of paint and wax, transforming its appearance to perfectly complement the rustic cottage aesthetic. This DIY project breathed new life into an otherwise ordinary piece.

The nightstands, a major clearance find at $100 for the pair, also received a custom treatment. I applied a two-toned paint finish, adding depth and visual interest that elevates them beyond their original, more generic appearance. This simple yet effective DIY made them feel bespoke for the space.

My dad discovered a stylish bench at HomeGoods, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also serves a practical purpose: it’s the perfect spot for guests to stash their suitcases, keeping the room tidy. As a heartfelt gesture of gratitude for my parents’ immense support during our move, I commissioned an artist to paint a beautiful watercolor portrait of their house. This personalized piece adds an incredibly warm and thoughtful touch to the room, making it truly special.

The window seat, a cherished part of my childhood, once housed my enormous collection of Barbies. To this day, those Barbies remain inside, ready for Olivia to enjoy when she visits, maintaining a sweet connection to the past. My mom generously crafted a custom cushion for the window seat using a lovely ticking stripe fabric, adding to the cottage charm. The accent pillows were affordable finds from H&M and TJMaxx. We opted for a simple window treatment, keeping the existing plantation shutters uncovered to allow maximum light and maintain an airy feel, foregoing additional curtains.

To replace the old, undersized dresser, I discovered a real treasure for just $20 on a local Facebook buy/sell/trade group. This piece was then lovingly painted, waxed, and restained to achieve a beautiful French blue finish. It stands out as one of my all-time favorite furniture flips, a true testament to the power of imagination and a little bit of elbow grease!

The remaining decorative elements throughout the room were largely sourced from thrift stores and clearance aisles, proving that you don’t need to spend a fortune to achieve a cohesive and charming look. Each piece was carefully selected to enhance the serene cottage atmosphere, bringing together texture, color, and character.
