Essential Organization Zones: Diapering & Small Items
The changing station is arguably the most frequented spot in the nursery, making efficient organization here paramount. Keeping diapering essentials, small toiletries, and distracting toys within arm’s reach will make changes quicker, cleaner, and more pleasant for everyone involved. Here’s how to master this crucial zone.

1. The Indispensable Hamper
A well-chosen hamper is an unsung hero in nursery organization. We opted for a stylish metal hamper with a key feature: a removable, washable liner. This is critical for maintaining hygiene and simplifying laundry day. Furthermore, its lidded design is a game-changer for containing those inevitable “funky smells” that accompany baby clothes, especially as your little one grows and their adventures become messier. Position it strategically near the changing station or dresser for easy toss-in access, ensuring soiled items are quickly out of sight and smell.

2. Clever Kitchen & Bathroom Canisters for Small Storage
Don’t limit your storage search to the baby aisle! Ceramic and glass lidded canisters, typically found in kitchenware or bathroom sections, are perfect for corralling all those tiny nursery items that tend to get lost. Their aesthetic appeal adds a decorative touch while their functionality keeps things neatly organized and easily accessible. We integrated several sizes into our changing station setup.

The largest canister became the designated home for all of Regan’s headbands and bows. This keeps them tidy, prevents crushing, and makes it simple to pick the perfect accessory for her outfit.

A medium-sized canister proved ideal for storing pacifiers and paci clips. This not only keeps them organized but, more importantly, ensures they remain sanitary and ready for use. No more rummaging through drawers for a clean pacifier!
And for those specific, infrequent needs, the smallest canister conveniently holds Q-tips, perfect for gentle cleaning of tiny ears and noses when necessary.

3. The Versatile Tiered Fruit Basket
Another ingenious find from the kitchenware aisle was a tiered basket. Its multi-level design makes it incredibly functional for the changing station, allowing you to categorize and easily access various items. We filled ours with Wubbanubs, soft washcloths, and an assortment of grabby toys. These small distractions are invaluable during diaper changes, keeping your little one entertained and still.
To further enhance the changing experience, we included two elegant soap dispensers within the basket. One holds hand sanitizer for quick parent hygiene, and the other contains baby lotion for post-change moisturizing, ensuring everything you need is right at your fingertips.
Dresser Organization: Mastering Clothing & Diaper Storage
The dresser serves as the central hub for clothing, diapers, and various baby care essentials. Investing in a dresser with good organizational potential, like the IKEA Hemnes, and utilizing smart drawer inserts can make a world of difference in keeping these items neat and accessible. Here’s a detailed look into how we maximized every drawer for ultimate efficiency.

Dresser: A Foundation for Functional Storage
For Regan’s nursery, we opted for a new dresser, specifically the IKEA Hemnes, diverging from our usual thrifted furniture route. This choice was driven by its fantastic organizational potential, offering a variety of drawer inserts that allow for custom configurations. A well-designed dresser is not just a piece of furniture; it’s a strategic storage unit, vital for maintaining order in a baby’s room.

4. Dresser Drawer #1: Diapering & Health Essentials
This top drawer is dedicated to immediate diapering needs and essential health items, ensuring they are always within easy reach during changes. We’re exploring cloth diapering, so this drawer conveniently stores cloth diaper liners. Alongside these, you’ll find all of Regan’s medicines, diaper cream, thermometer, and aspirator. Keeping these crucial items in a high drawer helps to keep them safely out of reach as she grows. Additionally, a container of disposable wipes is on hand for quick cleanings. While we primarily use moistened cloth diaper wipes stored in a dispenser for routine changes, having some disposable options provides flexibility, especially for unexpected messes or when on the go.

5. Dresser Drawer #2: Cloth Diaper Covers
Continuing our cloth diapering journey, this drawer is exclusively for our collection of cloth diaper covers. We have about 30 covers, which aligns with the recommended quantity to ensure a consistent rotation between washes. Storing them together in one dedicated drawer makes selecting a fresh cover simple and keeps our cloth diapering system organized and efficient.

6. Dresser Drawer #3: Disposable Diapers, Socks, & Mittens
Flexibility is key in baby care. This drawer houses a small stash of disposable diapers, offering a convenient alternative for grandparents or babysitters who might be less familiar with cloth diapering. It ensures everyone feels comfortable and confident when pitching in with changes. The genius of an IKEA organizational insert shines here, perfectly sectioning off space for all those tiny socks and mittens, preventing them from becoming a tangled mess at the bottom of the drawer.

7. Dresser Drawer #4: Burp Cloths, Bibs, & Hats
Quick access to feeding accessories and headwear is vital. This drawer is dedicated to neatly stacked burp cloths, an assortment of bibs, and various hats. Keeping these items folded or rolled allows for maximum storage in a compact space, ensuring you can grab what you need without rummaging, whether it’s for a quick spit-up cleanup or to complete an adorable outfit.

8. Dresser Drawer #5: Newborn & 0-3 Month Essentials
The early months are all about swaddles and tiny outfits! This drawer holds a carefully rolled collection of swaddle blankets, keeping them compact and easy to grab—a true lifesaver for those frequent nighttime changes and soothing sessions. It’s also home to all newborn and 0-3 month sized onesies, footie pajamas, and sweet pea gowns. Categorizing clothing by size in this manner prevents clutter and ensures you’re always reaching for the correct size for your rapidly growing infant.

9. Dresser Drawer #6: 3-6 Month Clothing
As babies grow quickly, it’s wise to have the next size up ready and waiting. This drawer is dedicated to 3-6 month sized pajamas, onesies, and pants. Keeping these categories separate helps you easily transition clothing as your baby outgrows their current wardrobe, avoiding the frantic search for larger sizes when you suddenly realize an outfit is too snug.

10. Dresser Drawer #7: 6-9 Month Clothing & Comfort Items
This drawer provides ample space for 6-9 month sized clothes, ensuring a continuous supply of appropriate attire. Additionally, it serves as a home for a few security blankets. While not daily necessities, these comfort items are valuable to have on hand for soothing, cuddling, or providing a familiar sensory experience as your baby develops.

11. Dresser Drawer #8: 9-12 Month Clothing & Overflow Essentials
The largest bottom drawer accommodates 9-12 month sized clothes. Since this age range might not require as extensive a wardrobe initially, this drawer also serves as an invaluable overflow area for other nursery essentials. Here you’ll find bath wash, spare bottles of lotion, changing pad protectors, extra Boppy covers, a travel wet bag for soiled items on the go, an extra washable wet bag for cloth diapers between washes, Boogie Wipes, and the baby grooming kit. This comprehensive drawer ensures that less frequently used but important items are neatly stored and easily accessible when needed.
Closet System: Maximizing Vertical Space & Future Growth
A nursery closet is often an underutilized space. By redesigning it with solid shelving, drawers, and baskets, you can transform it into a powerhouse of organization, perfect for storing current clothing, future sizes, and miscellaneous baby gear. Making it aesthetically pleasing, perhaps with wallpaper, can also serve as a great motivator to keep it tidy, much like our successful linen closet makeover.

Closet: A Strategic Storage Solution
We revamped this space by removing outdated wire shelving and installing durable solid shelves. This renovation significantly increased the closet’s functionality, creating designated areas for drawers and baskets. To add a touch of charm and encourage tidiness, we even incorporated wallpaper! A visually appealing space often motivates us to keep it organized, ensuring this nursery closet remains a beautiful and efficient storage area.

12. Closet Baskets: Preparing for Future Growth
Strategically placed baskets from Target are perfect for storing larger-sized play clothes that Regan will eventually grow into. It’s smart to plan ahead, especially if you receive hand-me-downs or stock up during sales. These baskets currently hold T-shirts, pants, and pajamas in 12-month, 18-month, and 24-month sizes. This system keeps future wardrobe items neatly categorized and protected until they’re ready to be rotated into the dresser, preventing clutter and ensuring efficient space management.

13. Books: Cultivating a Love for Reading
A stack of engaging baby books on a closet shelf ensures they are always within easy reach for bedtime stories. Establishing a reading routine early on is wonderful for development and bonding. We also keep her baby book here, making it convenient to document those precious first years and milestones as she grows.

14. Closet Drawer #1: Bulk Diaper & Wipe Storage
For convenience and practicality, this drawer is stocked with extra disposable diapers and wipes. This bulk storage is especially useful for when we travel, ensuring we always have supplies on hand, or for when Regan is being cared for by grandparents who might prefer disposable options over cloth diapering. It reduces last-minute rushes to the store and provides peace of mind.

15. Closet Drawer #2: Catch-All for Miscellaneous Gear
This “catch-all” drawer is designed to hold essential but less frequently used items. It contains breast milk storage bags, the baby carrier, noise-canceling ear muffs (perfect for protecting little ears in super loud environments), and a few tummy-time toys. Consolidating these items into one drawer keeps them organized and easily found when needed, without cluttering daily-use spaces.

16. Closet Divider Tags: Simplifying Clothing Sizes
One of the simplest yet most effective organizational tools is closet divider tags. We created and printed these on card stock to clearly separate hanging clothes by size. These tags make it incredibly easy to navigate the closet, quickly find the right outfit, and streamline the process of rotating clothes as your baby grows.

The Glider Nook: A Comfort Zone for Feeding & Soothing
The glider is more than just a chair; it’s a personal sanctuary for feeding, comforting, and bonding with your baby. Designing this area with intentional organization ensures that everything you need for those tender moments is within arm’s reach, allowing you to focus completely on your little one.
Glider: Your Essential Comfort Station
This comfortable glider quickly becomes the heart of the nursery, witnessing countless nursing sessions and soothing moments. To maximize its functionality, we meticulously organized the surrounding area, ensuring that every essential item for rocking Regan to sleep, feeding her, or simply enjoying quiet time together is easily accessible.

17. Side Table: Ambient Lighting & Soothing Sounds
A well-placed side table next to the glider is critical for holding immediate necessities. We outfitted an accent lamp with a sleeper bulb, which emits a soft, warm glow. This gentle lighting is perfect for nighttime feedings, as it won’t fully awaken you or your baby, promoting quicker return to sleep. The table also hosts a Hatch sound machine, offering 6 pre-programmed white noise sounds. White noise is incredibly effective for masking household sounds, helping babies fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer, creating a truly peaceful environment.

18. Nursing Basket: All Feeding Essentials in One Place
To further enhance the comfort and convenience of the feeding area, a small, easily accessible nursing basket sits beside the chair. This basket is a thoughtfully curated collection of essentials: nursing pads, a couple of burp cloths for inevitable spit-ups, lanolin for comfort, lavender essential oil (which can be diffused nearby to create a relaxing atmosphere for both mom and baby), and, crucially, a bottle of water to ensure hydration for milk supply. Having these items neatly contained and readily available allows for uninterrupted, peaceful feeding sessions.
Embrace the Calm: The Benefits of a Thoughtfully Organized Nursery
This grand tour of nursery organization highlights a fundamental truth: even the smallest human beings come with a surprisingly large array of accessories and the constant need for them to be within reach. But knowing exactly where everything is and having well-placed amenities throughout the room dramatically reduces stress levels for new parents.
A functional and organized nursery doesn’t just look good; it actively supports your parenting journey. It means less time searching for a clean onesie in the middle of the night, fewer frantic moments looking for a pacifier, and more opportunities to simply enjoy the precious moments with your baby. From the smart use of kitchen canisters to repurpose storage for tiny items, to the strategic setup of a feeding nook that anticipates your every need, each organizational choice contributes to a calmer, more efficient environment.
Remember, organization is an ongoing process, especially as your baby grows and their needs evolve. What works for a newborn might need slight adjustments for a six-month-old. The key is to create a system that is flexible, logical, and easy for you to maintain. By investing a little time upfront to organize your nursery, you’re investing in your own well-being and creating a more harmonious space for your family.
