DIY Seashell Printer Tray Shadow Box: A Coastal Decor Masterpiece
Every home tells a story, and for us, some of our favorite chapters are written during our beach vacations. The salty air, the calming waves, and the endless hunt for nature’s tiny treasures – seashells – all contribute to memories we cherish. But what do you do with those precious finds once you return home? Tucking them away in a box seems like a disservice to their natural beauty and the moments they represent. We believe these mementos deserve a place of honor, transforming them from simple souvenirs into captivating coastal home decor.
Just a few weeks ago, my husband, Robert, stumbled upon the enchanting world of Pinterest. He playfully calls it “Manterest,” but his initial skepticism quickly turned into enthusiastic discovery. He started scrolling, intrigued by the endless stream of creative ideas. Soon, his eyes widened with each new project, and every few seconds, he was excitedly sharing another “insanely legit” DIY idea he wanted us to tackle. It was a delightful surprise to see him so captivated by the creative spirit that often guides my own projects. Truly, he’s a man after my own heart when it comes to appreciating the magic of DIY.
It was during our recent vacation to the sun-kissed shores of Myrtle Beach that Robert unearthed a “Manterest” idea that resonated deeply with both of us. As we enjoyed our serene evening walks along the shore, we gathered a stunning collection of seashells, each one unique in its shape, color, and texture. The dilemma, as it often is for beach lovers, was how to best preserve and display these beautiful fragments of our trip. That’s when the idea of showcasing them in a printer tray shadow box emerged – a brilliant solution to keep these precious treasures from being relegated to a dusty shoebox in the closet. These little beauties were far too charming to be hidden away; they deserved to shine as a vibrant reminder of our coastal adventures.

Bringing Coastal Charm Home: The Printer Tray Shadow Box Concept
When 3M® approached me with an invitation to create a fun summer craft, the decision was instantaneous. I knew exactly what project to pursue: a DIY seashell printer tray shadow box. This project offered the perfect opportunity to merge our cherished beach memories with a creative, functional piece of home decor. A printer’s tray, with its numerous small compartments, provides an ideal framework for showcasing individual shells, turning a simple collection into an organized, visually appealing display.
My regular grocery runs often include an unplanned detour down the crafting aisle at Walmart. It’s a habit I can’t seem to break; the vibrant colors and endless possibilities always call to me, even from the produce section! During one such “necessary” detour, I gathered the perfect tools for our seashell project: a pack of Scotch® Mounting Squares and a Scotch® Precision Titanium Utility Knife. These Scotch® and Command™ products, now conveniently located together in the crafting aisle, make finding essential supplies for any DIY endeavor incredibly simple and efficient.
To truly achieve that vintage, charming aesthetic for our coastal vignette, I embarked on a search for an authentic printer’s tray. Etsy, a treasure trove for unique vintage finds, proved to be the perfect place, where I snagged a beautiful tray for an absolute steal. The original green paint on the front wasn’t quite aligned with the serene coastal vibe I envisioned, so a quick makeover was in order. A refreshing coat of my favorite Duck Egg blue paint instantly transformed the tray, providing the ideal backdrop for our sun-kissed shells.

The Crafting Process: Simple Steps for a Stunning Seashell Display
One of my guiding principles for home decor is flexibility. I love to redecorate and refresh spaces, meaning I often shy away from permanent solutions. This project was no exception, making the Scotch® Mounting Squares an absolutely perfect choice. Their strong, yet removable, adhesive offered the ideal way to secure the shells without making an irreversible commitment. I typically keep a healthy stock of Scotch® mounting tape or squares and Command™ hooks on hand precisely for these “commitment issues” – they’re indispensable for creating dynamic and adaptable displays.

The first step in assembling our seashell printer tray shadow box was to “dry fit” the shells. This involves carefully arranging each shell within the various compartments of the tray without any adhesive, allowing me to experiment with different layouts until I found the perfect balance and aesthetic. It’s a crucial step that ensures you’re happy with the composition before making anything permanent. I moved them around, swapped positions, and considered the interplay of colors and shapes until the arrangement felt just right – a miniature gallery awaiting its grand reveal.

Once the layout was finalized, it was time to secure each precious shell. I took a Scotch® Mounting Square and affixed it to the back of each shell. For the smaller, more delicate shells, the Scotch® Precision Titanium Utility Knife proved invaluable. Its sharp, precise blade allowed me to effortlessly cut the mounting squares to the perfect size, ensuring a discreet and secure hold without any excess adhesive peeking out. This attention to detail really makes a difference in the finished piece, creating a polished and professional look.

As I secured each shell into its designated spot, I couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate beauty of these natural wonders. Each shell, a miniature work of art, tells a silent story of the ocean. It made me wonder about the little creatures that once called them home. We were very mindful during our beach walks, only collecting shells that were truly empty, respecting the marine life that still occupied many others. It’s a small ethical consideration that adds to the joy of collecting these natural treasures. The process of arranging and securing each one was incredibly meditative, a perfect way to spend a quiet afternoon.

With the shells perfectly dry-fitted and ready, I began sticking them onto the back of the printer’s tray, following my pre-determined layout. This was the final, satisfying step in the assembly process. I turned on an episode of Parks and Rec – the perfect companion for a relaxed crafting session – and in about 30 minutes, this charming coastal piece was complete. Netflix truly is the ideal naptime crafting partner around here! The Scotch® Mounting Squares worked flawlessly, providing a robust hold. Even two weeks after completing the project, every single shell remains firmly in place, demonstrating the reliability and strength of the adhesive.

Showcasing Your Coastal Vignette: A Memory-Filled Display
The finished DIY seashell printer tray shadow box is more than just a craft; it’s a beautiful, tangible representation of cherished family memories. While I often confess that I don’t always go all-out with seasonal decorating, this piece is an exception. It’s not just a summer decoration; it’s a personal memento, a snapshot of our favorite beach pastime, now proudly displayed in our living room. It’s a subtle yet powerful reminder of sun, sand, and shared laughter, bringing a touch of coastal serenity into our everyday space.

This beautiful seashell display has found its perfect home on our media cabinet, blending seamlessly with our existing decor. It sits comfortably alongside our oversized vintage map, creating a cohesive and well-traveled aesthetic. The combination of the warm tones of the map with the cool, natural hues of the seashells evokes a sense of adventure and wanderlust, making this corner of our living room a true focal point for storytelling and inspiration. It’s a wonderful way to personalize a space, reflecting our passions and experiences.

Even our daughter, Olivia, has her favorite shells within the display. She’s particularly fond of what she calls the “purple butterfly” shells, because, in her sweet imagination, they represent Daddy, Mommy, and baby shells. It’s a delightful interpretation that makes perfect sense from a child’s perspective and adds another layer of sentimental value to this already special piece. These small, personal touches are what truly transform a house into a home, imbuing every object with meaning and memories.

And, of course, I couldn’t resist letting my English literature nerd flag fly just a little bit higher! A coastal display, especially one inspired by ocean adventures, simply begs for some classic literary companions. So, naturally, I added copies of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and Herman Melville’s monumental Moby Dick to complete the vignette. My former students might roll their eyes, recalling debates about “Mrs. Shaver, Moby Dick is sooo lame,” but for me, these books are quintessential symbols of the sea’s enduring allure. They perfectly encapsulate the spirit of exploration and discovery that our seashell collection represents, adding intellectual depth to our charming coastal scene.

I genuinely don’t think I’ll ever have the heart to dismantle this particular summer vignette. As much as I adore the cozy charm of fall decor, these seashells have carved out a permanent place in our home and our hearts. They’re a constant source of joy and a beautiful reminder of sun-filled days. I’m thinking the shells will just have to stay, transitioning through the seasons with a timeless appeal, and everyone will simply have to get over it. Right?
