Seasonal Pillows: Beyond Autumn

The Best Fall Pillow Covers for Year-Round Decor: Where to Buy and How to Style

Let’s be honest, I’m not a fan of spending money on decor that only lasts a couple of months. If I’m investing in a fall pillow, I want it to look good in winter, spring, and summer too!

Whether you’re a throw pillow enthusiast like me or simply appreciate smart storage solutions, this guide is for you. We’ll explore transitional fall throw pillows that seamlessly fit into any season. (By the way, did you spot Lola in the photo below?)

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, we naturally spend more time indoors. Creating a cozy atmosphere is key, and fall throw pillows, autumn leaves, and candles are some of my favorite ways to do that.

Switching up the pillows in your living room or bedrooms is the easiest, most affordable way to refresh your home’s look for a new season without a complete overhaul.

So, I’ve compiled a list of the best fall pillows and pillow covers that you can mix, match, and enjoy year-round, getting the most value for your money.

The Best Fall Pillows and Covers for All Seasons

To ensure my fall pillows work beyond autumn, I steer clear of designs with overtly seasonal images or phrases like embroidered pumpkins or “Happy Fall.” This approach also lends a more sophisticated feel, which is always a plus. (If store bought isn’t your jam, here are 3 household items you can make into pillows.)

The pillow covers and pillows I’ve selected can transition seamlessly through multiple seasons, and many are incredibly affordable, starting as low as $16 for a set of two!

Fall Throw Pillows vs. Fall Pillow Covers

If storage is a concern, pillow covers are a fantastic option. They eliminate the need to store bulky pillow inserts while still allowing you to change the look of your living room or bedroom. Plus, they’re easy to clean – just unzip and toss them in the wash. And, they’re generally more budget-friendly than buying complete pillows.

However, pillow covers can be limited in design options compared to full pillows, which may feature embellishments like beading, embroidery, or other textures.

Pillow Insert Recommendations

For pillow covers, I recommend these throw pillow inserts. Choose inserts one size larger than your cover for a plush, overstuffed look. So, if you have a 20-inch cover, opt for a 22-inch insert.

Overstuffed pillows look more high-end than under-filled ones. Good quality down or down alternative inserts make a big difference in elevating the overall look of your throw pillows, in contrast to polyfill inserts.

Tip: If you’re looking for affordable, quality inserts, check the clearance sections at stores like HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, or Marshalls. You can often find pillows with slightly flawed covers at discounted prices. Just buy them for the insert and toss the damaged cover.

How to Mix and Match Fall Pillows

I have an entire blog post dedicated to the art of mixing and matching pillows, but here’s a simple formula to get you started:

Option 1:

1 complex pattern/print + 1 geometric print + 1 solid/textured fabric

And/or

Option 2:

1 main color + 1 accent color + 1 neutral

Experiment with different textures like leather, tweed, sherpa, and linen to add depth. Pair plaids with florals, or stripes with geometric patterns. Use a solid pillow to balance the other prints.

Generally, groupings of two or three pillows work well.

Recommended Pillow Sizes

  • For Sofas: I typically use a 22″-24″ throw pillow as the base, complemented by a smaller 18″-22″ pillow. If your sofa is deep, consider adding a lumbar pillow in front.
  • For Beds: I like a 24″-26″ euro pillow as the base, flanked by 22″-24″ pillows, and a long lumbar in front.

Fall Pillow Combinations

Fall Color Trends

The beauty of warmer home decor color palettes is that fall hues are now welcomed all year long. Burgundy, rust, mustard, beige, chocolate, and even eggplant have a rightful place in winter, spring, and summer decor.

Some designers are even declaring pastels as the “it” look for fall, so don’t be afraid to pull out your pastel spring pillows from September through November.
