We’ve successfully used a kitchen command center for over five years, refining its design to meet our family’s evolving needs. This article shares how you can create your own personalized command center, enhancing organization and efficiency within your home.

Ever find yourself scrambling on a busy Monday morning, realizing you’ve forgotten something important? A well-designed home command center is designed to help prevent these situations. It offers a centralized location for managing your family’s daily activities.

If you have some free wall space in your kitchen, mudroom, or laundry room, a home command center can be the perfect solution to keep your family organized. It helps you stay on top of daily tasks and events.

What is a Home Command Center?

A home command center is a dedicated space in your home designed to streamline organization for the entire family. It serves as a central hub for managing schedules, important dates, to-do lists, chore charts, grocery lists, mail, important documents, messages, menus, keys, and bags.

Think of it as your home’s central operations hub: the “drop zone” when you enter, the “check-out zone” before you leave, and the place that helps your family’s daily life run smoothly. It’s where everyone knows to look for information.

Kitchen Command Center Ideas

Creating a family command center is straightforward, but it helps to determine the available space and your family’s specific organizational needs. Here are some kitchen command center ideas based on our own experience to inspire you.

1. Choose a Blank Wall in a Central Part of Your Home

The best place to establish your command center is a blank wall in a central area of your home, like your entryway or kitchen. The closer it is to where your family enters and exits the house, the more effective it will be.

Consider locations like your entryway, home office, or even the inside of your kitchen cabinet doors if space is limited. The size of the space doesn’t matter as much as the location. Choose a spot that the whole family will see daily.

In our kitchen, a wall that once made me cringe has been transformed into an effective command center. The shelf previously installed there was simply a clutter collector.

Shelves like that often fail to deliver true organization. After removing it, we discovered a surprise behind it—some quirky wallpaper! After a little work, we hung replacements to create our family command center.

2. Hang a Family Wall Calendar

A wall calendar is an essential component of a home command center. You can use a dry-erase board, a chalkboard calendar, a simple paper calendar, or a peel-and-stick vinyl calendar that adheres directly to the wall. Select a large size, with ample space for each family member to record their events and appointments.

We love using this personalized acrylic wall calendar for jotting down menus, grocery lists, important reminders, and notes to each other.

3. Include a Paper Sorter

Paper clutter can quickly take over your kitchen counters. A wall-mounted paper sorter can make a huge difference.

Use the slots to organize receipts, coupons, incoming mail, bills, school papers, and other important documents. To enhance organization, use a label maker to clearly identify each slot.

Adding labels or file folders will help you streamline the sorting process.

4. Keep a Key Rack Handy

Many families struggle with lost keys. A key rack is a simple solution to keep them organized and reduce clutter on your surfaces. A few hooks from the hardware store are usually sufficient, unless you need to store many key sets.

5. Add a Bulletin Board

A bulletin board provides a convenient place to display last-minute notes from school and other important items to keep everyone on the same page.

Keep push pins handy to secure documents, shopping lists, bills, schoolwork, business cards, or anything else that needs to remain visible.

We like to use ours to leave messages for each other and display greeting cards.

6. Include Markers for Color Coding

Hang a small wall-mounted basket near your family wall calendar to hold dry-erase markers. Use different colors to color-code your schedule.

Assign a specific color to each family member or event type to make it easy to see everyone’s schedules at a glance.

7. Incorporate Storage Needs Specific for Your Family

Consider adding storage solutions for items you need to grab on your way out the door if you have space. Add hooks for backpacks and lunch boxes or a small shelf for purses.

We added a small ledge for sunglasses and wallets and a wall hook for our dog’s leash and collar.

We’ve made adjustments and tweaks to our command center over the years, but it’s remained an effective system for our family. Making adulting easier is a win, right?
