Transform Your Backyard: Building a DIY Serena & Lily Inspired Poolside Cabana on a Budget
Imagine escaping to a luxurious resort without ever leaving your home. With our DIY poolside cabana project, this dream becomes a reality. Built in just two days and styled with a distinct Serena & Lily flair, this backyard addition provides essential shade by the pool, transforming our outdoor space into a chic, comfortable retreat for a fraction of the cost. If you’ve ever yearned for those vibrant South Beach Miami vacation vibes in your own backyard, read on to discover how we brought this vision to life.
What started as a simple DIY pergola kit we installed next to our swimming pool in 2021 has evolved into a centerpiece of our outdoor living. While technically a pergola, its elegant design and thoughtful styling elevate it to a sophisticated backyard cabana. This wasn’t just another weekend home improvement project; it was a strategic move to combat the intense sun and create a truly functional and beautiful outdoor sanctuary.

Why a DIY Poolside Cabana is Your Ultimate Backyard Upgrade
Years later, this structure remains one of the smartest enhancements we’ve made to our backyard pool area. In regions where natural tree cover is scarce, and the sun beats down relentlessly, a dedicated shade structure isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity. This project offered the perfect solution, creating a cool, shaded haven where we can truly unwind and escape the everyday hustle. The feeling of having such a relaxing setup, reminiscent of a five-star resort, right outside our door is truly invaluable.
We’re thrilled to share our process, detailing every step and the materials we used, so you can embark on your own backyard transformation. Prepare to build a stylish, functional cabana that will enhance your outdoor living experience for years to come. First, let’s take a look at what this particular spot by our pool looked like before its dramatic makeover.

Choosing the Right Foundation: How to Make a Backyard Cabana Using a Tojagrid Kit
Creating robust outdoor cabanas in our pool area would have been a far more daunting task, if not nearly impossible for us DIY enthusiasts, without the innovative Double Pergola Kit from Tojagrid. While we might have eventually pieced together the necessary decking hardware, our engineering skills and available time didn’t quite match the ambition of this project. Opting for a pre-designed kit was a strategic decision that saved us countless hours of planning, measuring, and potential headaches, ensuring a professional and sturdy outcome.
The beauty of the Tojagrid system lies in its simplicity and comprehensive nature. The kit arrived with all the essential connectors and even included custom-fit shade sails. This meant we could immediately assemble the pergola structure and begin enjoying much-needed shade in our new outdoor space, without the added expense or hassle of sourcing separate shade solutions. It’s an all-in-one package designed for convenience and efficiency, making high-end outdoor design accessible to homeowners.

Preparation is Key: Laying the Groundwork
Before assembly could even begin, some essential prep work was required. We enlisted contractors to fill in an existing flower bed, creating a robust and level concrete slab. This ensured a stable and expansive foundation perfectly suited for the large pergola structure. A solid base is paramount for any permanent outdoor fixture, especially one designed to withstand various weather conditions and provide lasting enjoyment.
What truly sets the Tojagrid kit apart from generic options found at big-box stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot is its superior quality and substantial presence. Unlike the often flimsy, mass-produced metal and wood pergolas, our kit results in a much more substantial structure. This creates a stronger focal point in the backyard, offering not just shade but also a significant architectural statement that enhances the overall aesthetic and value of the property.
Unveiling the Versatility: More Than Just a Poolside Retreat
While our primary goal was to create a chic, South Beach-inspired cabana, pergolas are incredibly versatile structures that can serve many purposes in an outdoor space. Beyond providing stylish shade by the pool, a well-built pergola can define and enhance various outdoor living zones. Consider these additional functional uses for your own outdoor entertainment space:
- Shady Hot Tub Spa Retreat: Position your hot tub under a pergola for a private, shaded, and luxurious spa experience, perfect for relaxation year-round.
- Al Fresco Dining Area: Create an elegant outdoor dining room, allowing you to enjoy meals with family and friends protected from direct sun or light rain.
- Cozy Fire Pit Gathering Zone: Designate a comfortable gathering area around a fire pit, where the pergola adds a sense of intimacy and overhead warmth, extending usability into cooler evenings.
- Functional Potting Shed or Garden Workstation: Transform a section into a stylish potting shed, providing a shaded workspace for gardening tasks and storing tools.
- Intimate Outdoor Daybed Nook: Install a comfortable outdoor daybed for ultimate relaxation, offering a tranquil spot for reading, napping, or simply enjoying the breeze.
- Outdoor Kitchen Extension: Integrate a pergola with your outdoor kitchen setup to provide shade over grilling areas or dining countertops, making cooking and entertaining more comfortable.

Crafting the Aesthetic: Styling Your Cabana for Resort-Level Comfort
Our inspiration for this poolside cabana drew heavily from these 7 pool cabana ideas, which guided the entire vision, aiming for those coveted Serena & Lily vibes without the premium price tag. The goal was simple: create an inviting space that evokes a sense of perpetual vacation. All that’s missing now is a mojito in hand to complete the idyllic scene!
For those who follow us on Instagram, you might have seen snippets of the entire DIY pergola building process documented in our Instagram Stories. This project was made possible with a kit generously gifted to us by Toja Grid, and we were incredibly grateful for the substantial help from my brother and dad, who were instrumental in hoisting the heavy components into place. We opted for a generous size of 8’x24’ for the cabana, ensuring ample shade and space for relaxation and entertaining by the pool.
Building Your Dream Cabana: Lessons Learned and Essential Tips
To be completely transparent, this project proved to be significantly more challenging than we initially anticipated. While the Tojagrid kit streamlines the process, working with 6×6 pressure-treated lumber is no small feat. That wood is deceptively heavy, and maneuvering it requires considerable strength and careful planning. We encountered a few hurdles that taught us valuable lessons, which we’re eager to share to help you avoid similar struggles.
Choosing Lighter Posts for Easier Assembly
In hindsight, our strongest recommendation for anyone undertaking a similar project is to consider using hollow 6×6 cedar deck posts. While pressure-treated lumber is durable, its solid mass makes it incredibly difficult to lift and position. Hollow cedar posts offer a much lighter alternative, making them far easier to maneuver during assembly. This simple change can drastically reduce the physical strain and potential for injury.
The Importance of Adequate Labor
Given the immense weight of the posts and the sheer size of our 8’x24′ outdoor cabana, we can’t stress enough the importance of having sufficient help. We managed with four people, but it involved three super strong men nearly injuring themselves, with little me diligently setting posts into each base plate as they lifted. For a structure of this scale, we strongly believe that a team of at least six people would make the assembly process much safer and considerably less strenuous. Even if we’re still feeling the effects in our joints a little bit, the joy of finally resting on one of these outdoor lounge chairs in the glorious shade by the pool makes every ounce of effort worthwhile.

P.S. Yes, I definitely stood squished against our fence inside of our bushes, silently praying no creepy crawlies would bite me while taking this photo. But trust me, the end result was absolutely #WorthIt!
Drawing Inspiration from Dreamy Destinations
Our vision for this outdoor living space was deeply rooted in cherished travel memories. Robert and I have been incredibly fortunate to visit some truly breathtaking places in recent years, which profoundly influenced the cabana’s aesthetic. A company trip to South Beach, Miami, when he worked in annuities, introduced us to vibrant, open-air luxury. Later, our 10-year wedding anniversary trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica, with its stunning pool pavilions, directly inspired the idea of billowy, elegant curtains for our own cabana.
It felt only natural to style our cabana to evoke the serene and luxurious atmosphere of these unforgettable vacations. Now, our backyard isn’t just a place to relax; it’s a little slice of paradise, a constant reminder of those dreamy getaways, and a perfect spot to create new cherished memories.

Adding Outdoor Curtains for Style and Functionality
To truly achieve that luxurious cabana feel and provide maximum comfort, adding outdoor curtains was an absolute must. We installed these UV blocking curtains all around the perimeter of the pergola, hung on durable outdoor curtain rods. These curtains are not just for aesthetics; they serve a vital practical purpose, offering adjustable shade when the sun inevitably shifts and begins to stream in from the sides of the pergola. They also provide a wonderful sense of privacy, creating an intimate outdoor room.
To ensure the curtains remained neat and manageable, even on breezy days, we thoughtfully attached these convenient tiebacks. This allows us to easily pull them open to embrace the sun or secure them in place, preventing them from flapping wildly in the wind when not needed for shade or privacy. The combination of functional design and elegant styling makes these curtains a key element in our cabana’s success.

Creating an Inviting Open-Air Cabana Seating Area
Central to any comfortable poolside retreat is the seating. For our cabana, we selected four outdoor lounge chairs, primarily hoping they would be easier to maintain and keep clean compared to chairs with bulky cushions. While their clean lines and low-maintenance appeal are undeniable, my only regret is not purchasing two additional chairs. The generous 8’x24′ dimensions of our pergola comfortably accommodate six lounge chairs, and having that extra seating would have been perfect for larger gatherings or simply more sprawling relaxation space. Although the exact model we purchased might be sold out, many similar stylish and durable outdoor lounge chairs are available on the market today.
To complement the lounge chairs and provide practical surfaces for drinks, sunscreen, or a good book, we incorporated several garden stools. These versatile pieces of outdoor furniture are among my favorites because their compact size and sturdy construction make them incredibly adaptable for use in various spots around the yard, not just under the cabana. Their functionality and aesthetic appeal contribute significantly to the overall comfort and convenience of the space. For an added touch of comfort and style, we also brought in outdoor pillows, providing a soft accent and extra support for long afternoons spent relaxing by the pool.

No poolside setup is complete without the right accessories, and these Turkish towels are absolutely perfect for the job. Their unique weave makes them exceptionally absorbent, quickly wicking away water after a swim. More importantly, they dry significantly faster in the sun compared to traditional plush towels, which helps prevent mildew and keeps them fresh for repeated use throughout the day. They add a touch of casual elegance, perfectly complementing the cabana’s relaxed, resort-inspired atmosphere.

Integrating Patio Furniture and Ambiance for Enhanced Outdoor Living
To further maximize the functionality and comfort of our outdoor living space, we strategically incorporated Better Homes and Gardens Patio Furniture Sets from Walmart a couple of years ago. These versatile sets are ideal because they seamlessly transition between comfortable seating and a practical dining area. They have performed exceptionally well, providing both style and durability within the cabana’s protective embrace, proving that elegant outdoor furniture doesn’t have to break the bank.
While this project was undoubtedly one of the most physically demanding endeavors we’ve ever tackled, the sheer satisfaction and joy it brings make every bead of sweat worthwhile. We truly couldn’t be happier with the outcome, which far exceeded our initial expectations. Over time, we’ve continued to enhance the ambiance, adding charming string lights and convenient solar pendant lights. String lights, in particular, always seem to be the “cherry on top” for any outdoor setting, instantly creating a magical and inviting atmosphere as evening falls.

Looking ahead, we envision even more improvements for our pool deck, with plans to implement concrete stamping for a more refined and textured finish. For now, however, our DIY painted concrete solution is holding up beautifully. We applied it in 2020, and it has proven to be remarkably durable and resilient, standing the test of time and heavy foot traffic remarkably well. This demonstrates that creative, budget-friendly solutions can provide long-lasting results and still look fantastic.

It’s a common experience for outdoor projects to seem more challenging and costly than initially anticipated. However, the immense satisfaction and joy derived from seeing these transformations come to fruition are truly unparalleled. The effort invested in creating a beautiful and functional outdoor space always pays off, turning dreams into tangible realities that enhance daily life.

A Full Backyard Transformation: From Drab to Fab
For a truly dramatic perspective on our backyard’s journey, let’s take a nostalgic look back. Can you recall when this entire area resembled this upon our initial move-in? It was a far cry from the serene oasis it is today, requiring a complete overhaul to reach its full potential.

Our comprehensive backyard renovation involved several key phases. We started by meticulously cleaning up the landscaping, removing overgrown foliage, and defining new garden beds. Next, we undertook the significant task of dismantling the old, rotted wood pergola swing that was no longer safe or aesthetically pleasing. The pool itself received a major update with a complete liner replacement, bringing a fresh, clean look to the water. The surrounding concrete also got a new lease on life with a fresh coat of paint, and finally, we constructed this beautiful DIY pergola cabana. Here is where all that hard work led us, a truly remarkable transformation.

With the addition of a brand new fence for enhanced privacy and security, and the strategic placement of more patio seating to create distinct conversation areas, our backyard pool space has truly blossomed into a cohesive and inviting outdoor retreat. This comprehensive approach, blending functionality with an aspirational aesthetic, has resulted in a backyard that is not only beautiful but also perfectly tailored for relaxation, entertaining, and making lasting family memories.
