My Tiny IKEA Closet Transformation!

IKEA Closet Makeover: Small Closet Organization in Our Master Bedroom

Finally! Our small master bedroom closets are officially done. This project, while not exactly following the original plan, turned out even better than expected. It was absolutely worth every minute, and we’re thrilled with the results.

Organized Master Closet

Reflecting back, those three trips to IKEA were completely worth it, as was maximizing every inch of space we had available. More importantly, the closet transformation process provided a valuable opportunity for us to declutter and identify the items that truly “spark joy,” resulting in a more organized and functional space.

Originally, we considered using the IKEA Pax system, but the dimensions of our closets just didn’t work. So, we adapted our approach.

The DIY IKEA Closet Solution

We implemented a creative solution by using four IKEA Billy bookcases and a slim Pax frame in the back of my L-shaped closet. This allowed us to maximize the available space and create a functional and stylish closet system.

Since drawers weren’t practical due to the limited space, we chose baskets to organize smaller items. These have proven to be the perfect solution.

Apologies for the less-than-perfect photos! The lighting in these small spaces was challenging, and my camera’s standard lens wasn’t quite up to the task.

Robert's Closet After

Robert didn’t need as much small storage as I did. We already use dressers in the bedroom for t-shirts, underwear, and shorts, so the baskets worked perfectly to keep everything tidy and organized.

His baskets now hold dress socks, winter accessories like hats and gloves, and any seasonal items. Everything is within easy reach.

We also added a pull-out rack for his ties and belts, which keeps these items neatly organized and easily accessible. Hooks on the wall provide a dedicated spot for his baseball caps.

The two small Pax drawers are perfect for storing swimwear, cover-ups, and shapewear for special occasions. It keeps those items neatly organized and readily available when needed.

Building a bridged gap to create a shoe cubby was a great decision. It maximizes space and offers a designated spot for shoes.

I organized my clothes by category (sweaters, jackets, blouses, pants, dresses), then by sub-categories within each category (sleeveless, short-sleeve, long-sleeve), and then by a ROYGBIV color gradient (black, brown, white, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). This system makes it effortless to put together outfits.

I love using wooden hangers in my closet because they don’t tangle as easily as the more streamlined alternatives. It’s all about personal preference, so you can choose whatever works best for you!
