How to Restore Outdoor Wooden Furniture: A Step-by-Step Guide
Ready to bring your old wooden furniture back to life? Here’s what you’ll need:
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Teak Oil: This is the key to restoring the natural beauty of your wood.
- Clean, Dry Rags: For applying the teak oil.
- Steam Cleaner (Optional, but recommended for cushions): If you have cushions, a steam cleaner will work wonders. We used this one.
- Carpet Shampoo (For Cushions): To get your cushions clean and fresh.
We’ve had our wooden outdoor chairs for about four years now. We originally purchased them from World Market (similar to these chairs). We loved them for their deep, sturdy design, and we knew they would last a long time if we took good care of them. You can also view this DIY Patio Makeover for more inspiration!

After a few years of exposure to the elements, the wood started to look dry and worn.

Here’s how we gave them a makeover:
- Clean the Wood: Start by wiping down the furniture with a clean, dry cloth to remove any loose dirt or debris.
- Apply Teak Oil: Generously apply teak oil to the wood, ensuring full coverage. The oil will penetrate the wood and restore its natural oils, bringing back its color and luster.
- Tighten Screws: Give all the screws on your furniture a quick tightening to ensure stability.
- Clean the Cushions (If Applicable): If your furniture has cushions, now’s the time to clean them. We used a steam cleaner with carpet shampoo to remove pollen, mildew, and grime from the previous year. If you don’t have a steam cleaner, you can find alternative solutions here.

The transformation was incredible! The teak oil soaked right into the dry wood, instantly reviving its appearance.

The steam cleaner worked wonders on our cushions, removing all the pollen and leaving them fresh and clean. The amount of pollen removed was astonishing! You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.

Here’s a look at the finished result. It’s amazing how a little effort can make such a big difference in the look of your outdoor space.
This simple project is a great way to extend the life of your furniture and save money in the process.
