This week marks the beginning of an incredibly significant and deeply personal project for Robert and me. It’s an endeavor that resonates with the core vision I’ve held for Bless’er House since its inception nearly a decade ago – a vision centered on creating beautiful, functional spaces that serve a higher purpose. The excitement is palpable, tempered only slightly by the immense responsibility we feel towards making this dream a reality.
Our dear friend, Amber, serves as the dedicated Coordinator at The Cottage, an essential year-round emergency safe shelter for homeless women. Located within the comprehensive Pathways Community Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina, The Cottage operates in vital partnership with The Life House Women’s Shelter. When Amber reached out, asking if we could lend our expertise to decorate their small conference room, my answer was an immediate and resounding “YES!” – an opportunity too meaningful to pass up.
The Life House Cottage provides an invaluable sanctuary, offering shelter to up to 35 women every night of the week. Beyond a safe place to sleep, it offers crucial amenities such as showers, laundry facilities, and nutritious meals and snacks. It’s a place where women can begin to regain stability and dignity.
Over the past year, I’ve had the profound privilege of bringing my daughter, Olivia, to volunteer with me at the shelter. These experiences have been incredibly humbling, allowing us to sit down and connect with women who embody extraordinary strength and resilience. Their stories are a testament to the human spirit, and witnessing their courage has only deepened our commitment to this project.
Our mission is to undertake a complete transformation of their conference room. This space is far more than just a meeting area; it’s a hub for critical services including counseling sessions, case management support, vital employment assistance, and empowering financial education workshops. This renovation is not merely about aesthetics; it’s about crafting an environment that actively supports these life-changing programs.

Transforming Lives: Our Conference Room Design Plan
We are immensely thrilled to be entrusted with designing a space that not only meets the practical needs of The Cottage but also radiates a profound sense of warmth and belonging. From the very moment a woman steps into this redesigned conference room, we want her to feel unequivocally loved, secure, and embraced by a comforting atmosphere. Our design philosophy extends beyond mere decoration; it aims to instill a feeling of dignity and provide a stable foundation from which to grow.
Bringing this detailed design plan to fruition is a goal we eagerly anticipate. The thought of seeing the finished space, transformed into a beacon of support and comfort, fills us with tremendous excitement and purpose.

A Welcoming and Functional Conference Table for Collaborative Support
The conference table is central to this space, acting as the primary point of interaction for group sessions and individual consultations. Recognizing that this room will frequently host multiple women simultaneously, we prioritized selecting a sturdy, generously sized table capable of comfortably seating 6-8 people at once. This ensures that every participant has ample space, fostering an environment conducive to productive discussions and respectful exchanges. The table isn’t just a piece of furniture; it’s a foundation for shared learning and mutual support.
Complementing the table, we’ve chosen Midcentury Mod style dining chairs. Their design is a perfect blend of form and function: compact enough to fit gracefully within a smaller room footprint, yet remarkably comfortable for extended periods of counseling, workshops, or personal reflection. Comfort is paramount, as it contributes significantly to a sense of ease and belonging, encouraging women to open up and engage fully in the services provided.
To infuse softness and sophistication into the industrial feel of the existing space, we plan to enhance the modest window with a pair of elegant jewel-toned curtain panels. These curtains will not only add a touch of color and texture but also help to filter light, creating a more intimate and less stark atmosphere. The cold, painted floor will be transformed by rolling out a beautiful traditional rug, instantly introducing warmth, sound absorption, and a much-needed layer of comfort underfoot. Finally, to combat the harshness of overhead fluorescent bulbs, we will install a stylish plug-in pendant lamp from the drop ceiling. This subtle lighting addition will cast a cozy, inviting glow, creating a more relaxed and therapeutic environment crucial for sensitive discussions and learning.
Enlivening Walls: Art, Functionality, and Ambiance
The existing conference room has only a single, small window and two modest doorways, leaving vast expanses of blank wall space. Our strategy for the wall decor is multi-faceted, aiming to visually expand the room, introduce warmth, and provide practical functionality. We intend to harness the power of art to create the illusion of additional windows, thereby brightening the space and making it feel less enclosed. This approach is not just about aesthetics; it’s about influencing the mood and psychological comfort of those using the room.
A key functional element will be the creation of two large, prominent memo boards. We plan to achieve this by adhering elegant mural wallpaper panels to sturdy sheet metal. These aren’t just decorative; they are designed to be highly functional, allowing the shelter staff to easily display important documents, announcements, and inspiring messages using magnets. This practical solution keeps critical information accessible while contributing to the overall design aesthetic.
On the back wall, we envision a carefully curated gallery wall. This display will feature a collection of framed vintage art pieces, selected for their serene imagery and comforting tones. Flanking this art arrangement, we will strategically place table lamps. These lamps will provide soft, ambient lighting, complementing the pendant light over the conference table and further softening the room’s atmosphere. The combination of inspiring art and gentle illumination will create a welcoming backdrop that fosters a sense of peace and encouragement for all who gather here.
Smart Storage Solutions: Blending Utility and Style
Effective storage is paramount in a multi-functional space like this conference room, especially where sensitive documents and supplies need to be organized. To achieve the sophisticated look of a custom, oversized sideboard without the bespoke cost, we’ve devised an ingenious plan: we will seamlessly push together three elegant small reeded accent cabinets. This arrangement will not only provide ample concealed storage for various materials but also create a continuous surface perfect for establishing a convenient and welcoming coffee bar. This thoughtful detail will offer a moment of comfort and hospitality, making the space feel more like a home and less like an institutional setting.
For Amber, the coordinator, a dedicated and functional workspace is essential. We’ve selected a beautiful secretary desk. This particular style is ideal because it boasts excellent built-in storage specifically designed for files and organizational needs. Its compact yet efficient design ensures that Amber has a private and organized area for her administrative tasks and one-on-one consultations, allowing her to serve the women more effectively while maintaining a tidy and professional appearance within the conference room.
Crafting a Serene Reading Corner: A Haven for Reflection
Every supportive environment benefits from a space dedicated to quiet contemplation and individual solace. To create a truly comfortable and inviting reading corner within the conference room, we envision a carefully curated arrangement designed for relaxation and personal reflection. This corner will serve as a gentle retreat, offering a sense of privacy and calm amidst the room’s primary functions.
Central to this cozy nook will be a plush armchair, selected for its exceptional comfort and inviting design. Paired with a stylish floor lamp, it will provide focused, warm lighting, perfect for reading, journaling, or simply unwinding. To further enhance the sense of spaciousness and light, we plan to incorporate a large windowpane mirror. This strategic placement will not only bounce natural light around the room, making it feel brighter and more open, but also add a touch of elegant design that visually expands the area, creating the illusion of more square footage.

The presence of greenery has a well-documented positive impact on mood and well-being, contributing to a more tranquil and revitalizing atmosphere.
