Thrift Store Chair Makeover: A Restoration Hardware Inspired Transformation
Some people have a knack for attracting stray animals. For me, it’s furniture. This time, a charming spare chair seemed to find its way into my car from a thrift store parking lot. I couldn’t resist its potential!

The chair, a mere $25, was sturdy, comfortable, and remarkably clean, a rare find in the thrift store world. But the dated orange vinyl upholstery needed an update. This project was the perfect candidate for my monthly “Trash to Treasure Transformation Tuesday” series, where I breathe new life into forgotten pieces.

My approach was simple: combine my favorite techniques to achieve a chic, high-end aesthetic without the high-end price tag. I focused on updating the wood frame and refreshing the vinyl seat. Here’s how I achieved the transformation:
Weathered Wood Finish: The Foundation of the Makeover
First, I tackled the wooden frame, applying my tried-and-true DIY weathered wood finish. This technique is easy to do and creates a beautiful, aged look that adds character and depth to any piece of furniture. You can find the full tutorial on how to achieve this finish by clicking on the link.
Updating the Vinyl Upholstery: A Simple Solution
The orange vinyl was the next challenge. Rather than attempting a complete reupholstery, I opted for a simpler, cost-effective solution: chalk paint! I chose Annie Sloan French Linen, a versatile neutral that complements a variety of decor styles.
Here’s the process I followed:
- Preparation: Clean the vinyl surface thoroughly to remove any dirt or grease.
- First Coat of Paint: Apply a coat of Annie Sloan French Linen chalk paint.
- Sanding: Once dry, lightly sand the painted surface with ultra-fine 500 grit sandpaper to create a smooth finish. This step ensures a seamless and durable result.
- Waxing: Apply Annie Sloan Clear Wax to protect the painted surface and give it a subtle sheen.

The result? A luxuriously smooth surface that still feels like vinyl or leather, but with a much more sophisticated look. The French Linen color offers a classic and timeless aesthetic.

The Final Reveal: A New Favorite Piece
The transformed chair now resides in the corner of our dining room, though it might eventually find a home in my husband Robert’s office once we get around to that space’s makeover. It adds a touch of understated elegance to the room and perfectly complements the other elements.

This little corner seems to be a popular spot for transformations, as it also features the DIY French wall sconce I made last month, which was also a thrift store find.

I am so pleased with how this chair turned out. The combination of French Linen chalk paint and weathered wood creates a look that is very reminiscent of Restoration Hardware. It’s a classic and timeless style that fits beautifully into any home decor.

The best part? This entire transformation cost very little, proving that you can achieve a high-end look without breaking the bank. It’s a testament to the power of a little creativity and a few simple products. It is a wonderful way to add style to your home without spending a fortune.
