48-Hour Dream Bathroom Makeover: Transforming Builder-Grade to Modern Farmhouse Charm

This incredible bathroom transformation was made possible by Lowe’s, our generous sponsor. All opinions and content shared are authentically my own.

Get ready to be inspired, because this is a project I’ve been absolutely dying to share! We embarked on a massive room makeover, a little secret we’ve been keeping under wraps, and the results are truly spectacular.

A few months ago, I announced an exciting collaboration with Lowe’s: a home makeover for a deserving family anywhere in the United States. We received countless submissions for kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces, each overflowing with potential. While I wished we could have helped every single one, one particular space stood out as a prime candidate for a dramatic transformation – a master bathroom in Texas.

Before: Plain builder-grade bathroom with beige walls and basic fixtures, awaiting a modern farmhouse transformation.

The homeowners, Bethany and Levi, captured our hearts with their story. Married for seven years, they resided in a typical suburban builder-grade house, right next door to Levi’s family. Bethany, a newly graduated mental health counselor intern, and Levi, a wedding videographer and worship band drummer, found that funds for home improvements were a luxury they couldn’t easily afford. Yet, their home was a hub for friends and family, and their two cats and a dog were undoubtedly cherished members of the household – a sentiment I deeply understand as a fellow pet parent!

Bethany eloquently expressed her desire for change: “If I’ve learned one thing about myself in the past few years, it’s that my environment affects everything about my physical, spiritual, and mental health. I am so not crafty nor handy, so the bathroom has been one room I haven’t been able to change. I would love to be able to wake up to a calm bathroom to start my morning off right and prepare for the day.” Her words resonated deeply, reminding me so much of my own journey with Robert and our approach to creating a comforting home environment.

With a clear vision and immense excitement, Robert and I flew to their home in April, joined by an incredibly talented group of fellow DIY bloggers: Rachel from Maison de Pax, Jenna from Rain on a Tin Roof, Nina from Nina Hendrick Design, and April from House By Hoff. Our mission? To completely overhaul this bathroom in a mere 48 hours.

A two-day deadline for a full bathroom renovation might sound daunting, but with careful planning and a dedicated team, we knew it was achievable. The bathroom had solid structural “bones,” which meant we could focus primarily on cosmetic enhancements rather than extensive, time-consuming demolition. Our goal was to infuse this bland, builder-grade space with personality, modern farmhouse charm, and the serene atmosphere Bethany longed for.

The most pressing issue was Bethany and Levi’s existing shower door, which was cloudy, rusted, and wouldn’t even close properly. This was a definite candidate for removal. We also targeted the dated faucets and light fixtures for an immediate upgrade. While our team wasn’t a crew of professional contractors, we believed in the power of mostly non-demo cosmetic changes to create a “wow” factor, and this bathroom certainly had that potential.

Our first tasks involved a bit of controlled “demo”: tearing out the old shower door and removing the outdated plumbing and lighting fixtures. Seeing Robert tackle the initial demo, it was hard to tell if that expression was pure excitement or a touch of apprehension – perhaps a healthy mix of both!

Throughout the makeover, we faced numerous unexpected challenges and “awry” projects. Each setback became an opportunity for collective problem-solving, a testament to the strength of our team. It was a weekend filled with incredible “girl power,” ably supported by Robert’s muscle. He truly got a workout keeping up with five hustling women, but he’s always the best sport, embracing every moment with a smile. Despite the inherent stress of a tight deadline and hard physical work, we shared countless laughs and forged wonderful memories.

The Dream Team in Action: Crafting a Modern Farmhouse Retreat

Every member of our DIY dream team brought their unique talents to the table, making the impossible possible:

  • **Nina** took charge as our cabinet painting pro, meticulously transforming the basic vanity with a fresh coat of Sherwin Williams Slate Tile, lending a sophisticated touch to the space.

Nina expertly paints the bathroom vanity cabinets, a key step in the transformation.

  • **Rachel**, impressively eight months pregnant at the time, was a force to be reckoned with, single-handedly building a stunning barn door and rigging two custom tracks. Her dedication was truly inspiring!

  • **Jenna** excelled on hardware duty, expertly installing new light fixtures, crafting a custom mirror frame, and fitting all the elegant cabinet pulls that tied the whole look together.

  • **April** was our whirlwind of efficiency, managing all the wall painting, touch-ups, and countless trips to procure the ever-needed supplies. Her efforts were crucial, though in the rush, I regrettably didn’t capture her in action with my camera – a true oversight on my part as a blogger!
  • As for me, I bounced between every odd job imaginable, including the slightly precarious task of balancing on the edge of the tub to wrestle with a new chandelier installation. Every hand was needed, and every task, big or small, contributed to our collective goal.

It was a true collaborative effort, with multiple people pitching in on every single project. The exhilarating rush of seeing each element come together, culminating in a cohesive and beautiful space, was the ultimate reward after all the hard work and problem-solving.

Bethany and Levi graciously stayed out of their master bedroom and bathroom throughout the entire weekend, eagerly awaiting the big surprise. The moment of their reveal was truly the best feeling in the world. Their genuine reactions of pure joy and astonishment made every drop of sweat and every late night worth it. They were the sweetest couple, and we couldn’t have asked for more welcoming or deserving hosts for this incredible project.

Key Elements of Our Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Makeover:

The Shower Door: A Clear Upgrade

The most noticeable improvement in the shower area was the complete replacement of their cloudy, rusted, and ill-fitting shower door. We opted for a sleek, oil-rubbed bronze framed door. This choice not only resolved the functional issues but also introduced a sophisticated contrast against the lighter wall tones, instantly elevating the space with a touch of modern elegance.

A new, clear glass shower door with oil-rubbed bronze framing enhances the bathroom's modern farmhouse style.

To further enhance the spa-like experience, we installed a larger, more luxurious shower head. This small detail significantly improves daily comfort and adds to the overall feeling of indulgence in their revitalized bathroom oasis.

The upgraded, larger shower head promises a more luxurious, spa-like bathing experience.

Elegant Lighting: A Blend of Styles

Above the tub, we introduced a striking chandelier that perfectly balances glam and industrial aesthetics. Its intricate design provides a beautiful feminine touch, while the metal accents complement the more masculine elements within the room, creating a harmonious and visually interesting focal point.

We also swapped out the old, uninspired Hollywood-style vanity lights for sophisticated seeded glass bronze fixtures. These not only provide better illumination but also add character and a touch of vintage-inspired charm that beautifully suits the modern farmhouse aesthetic.

A Calming Color Palette: Sherwin Williams Hues

To inject much-needed color and depth into the space, we painted the vanity cabinets in Sherwin Williams Slate Tile. This gorgeous, versatile shade has become a personal favorite, so much so that I’ve since used it in my own laundry room! It grounds the space and adds a rich, inviting warmth.

For the walls, we selected Sherwin Williams Gray Screen, a soft light gray with subtle blue undertones. This color was chosen specifically to evoke a sense of calm and serenity, creating the tranquil environment Bethany desired for her morning routine. The combination of these colors forms a sophisticated yet inviting backdrop for the modern farmhouse elements.

Complementing the new cabinet color, we replaced the old pulls with more industrial-style bronze ones. This choice continues the rich bronze finish throughout the room, creating a cohesive design and providing a pleasing contrast against the Slate Tile cabinets.

Small Changes, Big Impact: Budget-Friendly Upgrades

Sometimes the smallest adjustments yield the most significant results. Instead of replacing the existing builder-grade mirror, we simply framed it out with pine boards stained in Minwax Dark Walnut. This clever trick instantly elevated its appearance, adding a touch of rustic warmth and custom craftsmanship without a hefty price tag.

Another impactful yet budget-friendly solution was revitalizing the tile floor. We refreshed the grout lines by painting them with Valspar Duramax paint in the color Du Jour. This quick and simple step made the entire floor look brand new, brightening the space and making it feel much cleaner and more polished.

The framed builder-grade mirror and freshly painted grout lines contribute to the bathroom's rustic charm.

Adding Functionality with a Custom Barn Door

The “water closet” in the original bathroom was a misnomer, as it lacked a door entirely, offering no privacy. To rectify this, we custom-built a striking barn door from scratch, perfectly fitting the nine-foot opening. We then rigged a sturdy header for a sliding barn door track, transforming this formerly open corner into a private and highly functional space.

A custom-built sliding barn door enhances privacy and adds a rustic aesthetic to the water closet.

To ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent the bedroom door from colliding with our newly installed barn door, we opted for an unfinished barn door kit. We meticulously stained it with Minwax Weathered Oak, then sealed it with polyurethane to protect it from moisture, ensuring its longevity in a bathroom environment. Hanging it on a sliding track not only created an eye-catching feature with beautiful texture but also added immense functionality and privacy, seamlessly integrating into the modern farmhouse design.

Updated Faucets: A Feminine Touch

On their existing white cultured marble countertop, we installed elegant, curvier bronze sink faucets. This choice introduced a softer, more feminine aesthetic to the vanity area, perfectly complementing the rugged and industrial elements elsewhere in the bathroom, creating a beautiful balance.

Adding Art: Softness and Balance

To provide a welcome contrast to the robust wood and dark metal finishes, we incorporated a set of delicate botanical prints. These pieces introduced softness and visual interest, effectively balancing the frosted window and thoughtfully filling an otherwise awkward blank wall with beautiful, natural imagery.

Botanical prints add softness and visual interest, balancing the rustic elements in the bathroom.

Additionally, a charming blue botanical print was strategically placed beside their vanity, offering a fresh, modern take on farmhouse art. Its subtle color perfectly coordinates with the room’s palette, contributing to the serene and balanced atmosphere.

Smart Storage Solutions: Functionality Meets Style

A truly functional bathroom requires ample organization and storage. We integrated several smart solutions, such as these convenient wall hooks placed strategically right beside the shower door. These provide easy access for towels and robes, keeping the space tidy and efficient.

Practical wall hooks installed near the shower door offer convenient storage for towels.

In the newly privatized water closet, above the toilet, we transformed an existing cabinet by removing its doors to create stylish open shelving. These shelves were then filled with charming apothecary jars and woven baskets, perfect for neatly storing toiletries and other essentials. To add depth and tie the area seamlessly with the rest of the room, we painted the back of the cabinet the same Sherwin Williams Slate Tile color used on the vanity. This thoughtful detail not only enhances organization but also elevates the aesthetic appeal of the space.

Incorporating Natural Elements: Bringing the Room to Life

The final touch that truly brought this entire room to life was the strategic inclusion of natural elements. Faux succulents and silk flowers instantly added vibrancy and a refreshing organic feel. Plants possess a magical quality, breathing life into any space. By incorporating a variety of natural textures – from lush greenery and warm wood tones to intricately woven baskets, delicate glass accents, and soft textiles – the bathroom gained an incredible amount of warmth, character, and inviting charm.

This 48-hour bathroom makeover was undeniably one of the most challenging projects we’ve ever undertaken. There were countless hurdles and unexpected detours, but every ounce of hard work, every moment of collaborative problem-solving, and every bump in the road was profoundly worth it. I feel incredibly blessed to have been a part of this transformation and am absolutely thrilled with the final outcome.

Most importantly, I’m ecstatic that Bethany and Levi love their new space just as much as we do. They are truly deserving of a serene and beautiful sanctuary where they can recharge and continue to bless others with their unique talents. This project stands as powerful proof that with imagination, dedication, and a fantastic team, even the most basic builder-grade space can be transformed into a home filled with character and personal style.
