Tiny Humans Big Bathroom Makeover

Oh my stars, y’all! The moment we’ve been eagerly anticipating has finally arrived! We are absolutely thrilled to unveil what we believe is the most adorable and functional kids’ bathroom in existence – truly a space designed with love and practicality in mind.

Yes, I’m only slightly biased, but can you blame me? Just wait until you see the transformation! 😉

Whimsical, classic kids bathroom makeover with dual vessel sinks, retro floor tile, and faux marble shower

This bathroom’s journey has been nothing short of a complete metamorphosis. When we first moved into our home, this space was defined by its rather uninspiring beige beginnings. It was functional, certainly, but lacked any semblance of personality or charm, feeling more like an afterthought than a cherished part of our home.

For a while, Robert and I implemented a series of quick, temporary fixes. A fresh coat of paint was applied to virtually every surface, serving as a rapid disguise for the inherent shabbiness that permeated the room. While these efforts provided a superficial facelift, we knew deep down that a full-scale renovation was inevitable to truly bring this space to life.

And now, after weeks of planning, hard work, and creative execution, this bathroom stands beautifully transformed, perfectly ready to welcome our two sweet little girls. Every detail has been thoughtfully chosen to create a whimsical yet practical environment that will grow with them for years to come.

The journey to this stunning reveal has been an exciting one, filled with decisions both big and small. If you’re keen to dive deeper into the nitty-gritty of the renovation process, we’ve meticulously documented each stage. From the initial conceptualization to the final touches, every step was a labor of love, designed to achieve both beauty and functionality for a busy family bathroom. Below are the detailed breakdowns of the key phases:

  • Classic Kids’ Bathroom Renovation Plans: This initial stage involved extensive planning and design, where we mapped out our vision for a timeless yet playful space. We focused on creating a design that would appeal to young children but also possess the flexibility to adapt as they grow, incorporating classic elements with a whimsical twist.
  • Demo Day: The excitement of demolition day marked the official start of our renovation. Out with the old, drab fixtures and finishes, making way for a clean slate and the realization of our dream bathroom. This crucial step prepared the canvas for all the beautiful changes to come.
  • Faux Marble Shower Installation + Why We Love It Instead of Real Marble: Discover how we achieved the luxurious look of marble without the high maintenance and cost. Our choice of faux marble shower panels has proven to be a game-changer, offering durability and ease of cleaning—perfect for a kids’ bathroom.
  • How to Turn a Console Table Into a Bathroom Vanity: One of the most unique and space-saving solutions in our design was transforming a console table into a stylish and functional open vanity. This post details the creative process and practical steps involved in this innovative DIY project.
  • DIY Personalized Step Stools: To make the vanity truly kid-friendly, we crafted personalized step stools. Learn how we added a custom touch that makes daily routines easier and more enjoyable for our girls, fostering independence in their own charming space.

The Heart of the Bathroom: Shower and Tub Area

The shower and tub area needed to be both beautiful and incredibly resilient. We opted for the stunning shower walls from the American Standard Passage Collection. These panels are truly GORGEOUS, mimicking the luxurious appearance of real marble so perfectly that most people can’t tell the difference. However, unlike natural marble, this engineered material completely eliminates the common concerns about staining, etching, and high maintenance, which is notoriously tricky with real stone. For a busy household with little ones, battling persistent stains and tedious sealing was a battle I was simply not willing to fight.

Beyond the aesthetic and practical benefits, the Passage Collection also offers a much more budget-friendly alternative to genuine marble, without compromising on style. The installation process is remarkably straightforward, which was a huge bonus for our renovation timeline. Plus, for those seeking different aesthetics, these versatile walls are available in a variety of other appealing patterns, offering endless design possibilities.

Looking back at the “before” picture of the old shower, it’s clear this new system beats its predecessor by a million miles in terms of both aesthetics and functionality. The transformation is truly astounding.

To further enhance practicality and minimize potential sibling squabbles, we thoughtfully incorporated two Passage shower shelves. The idea was simple: assign one to each girl. Our hope is that by providing individual, designated spaces for their bath essentials, we can proactively reduce future arguments over shampoo and body wash, promoting a more harmonious bath time routine.

Safety and efficiency were paramount in selecting the fixtures. We installed the Chatfield tub and shower faucet, which boasts a crucial anti-scald valve. This innovative feature is designed to prevent sudden, dangerous spikes in water temperature, ensuring our girls are protected from accidental burns during their baths or showers. Moreover, this faucet is equipped with WaterSense technology, a fantastic addition that significantly decreases water usage, which not only contributes to environmental conservation but also helps us cut down on our monthly water bill – a welcome relief, as life with energetic kiddos tends to be quite demanding on water consumption!

For the tub itself, we chose the Ovation tub. Its thoughtful design provides a little extra width compared to standard models, making bath time feel a bit more spacious and luxurious for the girls without consuming an excessive amount of precious floor space in the bathroom. It’s the perfect balance of comfort and smart design.

The Charming Sinks & Custom Vanity

One of the non-negotiable elements for this bathroom renovation was an open vanity concept. This decision was primarily driven by the narrow dimensions of the space. We quickly realized that even standard-sized sinks would prove too wide and bulky, making the room feel cramped and obstructing movement. An open vanity offered the perfect elegant and practical solution.

The American Standard Morning vessel sinks fit our criteria perfectly. Their ideal size strikes a beautiful balance, providing ample basin space without overwhelming the countertop. Furthermore, their relatively low profile ensures that our girls can easily reach the faucets and use the sinks comfortably, fostering a sense of independence in their daily routines. These vessel sinks add a touch of modern sophistication while remaining highly functional for small hands.

Thankfully, the lack of traditional cabinet storage underneath the open vanity was not a concern for us. The bathroom is generously equipped with a large, deep linen closet, which comfortably accommodates all necessary storage. This allowed us the freedom to creatively adapt a console table into our custom vanity. We topped this console table with a robust butcher block, meticulously sealed with multiple coats of spar urethane. This protective treatment is crucial, offering exceptional water resistance and durability against inevitable splashes and spills, ensuring the vanity remains beautiful and functional for years to come.

Despite its open design, the console table still offers functional drawers. These are perfect for storing our girls’ hair brushes, combs, and other small toiletries. And, in what feels like a distant future (which I am SO not ready for!), these drawers will undoubtedly become the perfect spot for their first makeup palettes and accessories.

To complement the delicate aesthetics of the vessel sinks and add a touch of feminine elegance, I selected the Quentin faucets. Their design perfectly aligns with the whimsical yet classic theme of the bathroom. I deliberately chose a brushed nickel finish for all the hardware. While chrome is a popular choice, brushed nickel is significantly more forgiving when it comes to fingerprints and water spots, making it a much easier finish to maintain and keep looking clean in a children’s bathroom.

Another small but impactful decision for kid-friendliness was incorporating hand towel hooks instead of traditional towel rings. Hooks are inherently simpler for children to use, making it far more likely that towels will actually be hung up after use – a win for tidiness and peace of mind (here’s hoping anyway!).

The Game-Changing Toilet

Believe it or not, I was genuinely ecstatic about the toilet we chose! (A clear sign you’ve officially entered adulthood when toilet choices bring such joy!) We invested in the VorMax toilet, and its standout feature is nothing short of revolutionary: it’s self-cleaning! Can I get a resounding hallelujah from all the parents out there?

This ingenious toilet includes a discreet Lysol cartridge tucked inside. Every time the toilet is flushed, a dose of cleaning solution is released, actively cleaning the bowl. This means less scrubbing for me – the designated “maid” of the house – and a consistently fresher, more hygienic bathroom. It’s a small detail that makes a monumental difference in daily upkeep, especially with kids.

The Indispensable Linen Closet

The deep, spacious linen closet was truly the unsung hero of this bathroom design, and the primary reason we confidently embraced the open vanity table concept without any concerns about sacrificing storage space. This closet is incredibly functional and has remained largely unchanged from its previous iteration because it simply works so well for our family. It’s a master of organization, perfectly designed to hold a myriad of essentials. Here, we neatly store all our cleaning supplies, fresh towels, a laundry hamper, extra bedding for guests, an array of bath toys for joyful splash times, and all our daily toiletries. It’s a powerhouse of utility, ensuring everything has its designated place, keeping the rest of the bathroom clutter-free and serene. One of the aspects I cherish most about this renovation is the thoughtful design approach we adopted. By incorporating modern-traditional-retro touches and adhering to a predominantly neutral color palette, we’ve created a space that boasts incredible longevity and adaptability. This design foresight means we can effortlessly update the aesthetic of the bathroom as our girls mature. Should their preferences shift away from “blush” or other childhood favorites one day, a simple change of accessories or textiles will completely refresh the space without requiring another major overhaul.

I absolutely adore how this bathroom is poised to serve them wonderfully, not just through their early years, but well into their teenage phase. Its classic foundation allows for endless personalization. Furthermore, if we are fortunate enough to stay in this home long enough to experience an empty nest, this versatile bathroom can easily be transitioned into a more sophisticated guest bathroom. A few minor adjustments would transform it into an elegant and welcoming space for adult visitors, proving its enduring functionality and timeless appeal.

It’s truly astounding to witness the dramatic transformation from just a few short months ago. The before and after comparison is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and dedicated effort, turning a bland space into a vibrant and cherished part of our home.

This charming space now brims with whimsy and character, perfectly mirroring the lively and unique personalities of our girls. And perhaps that’s why it holds such a special place in my heart – it feels like an extension of them, a cheerful and functional sanctuary crafted just for them.

If photographs could truly convey emotion, this one would be positively squealing with joy right now, just so you know! 😉 It’s a dream come true, and every corner radiates happiness.
